★★★★★ “I could barely put this down…”
Appearances can be deceiving. And in Southern California, where the sun shines almost every day and make-believe has its own industry, it’s hard to tell what is real and what is merely illusion.
Two inquiries come to MDPI on the same day that seem like fairly straight-forward missing person cases. But it doesn’t take long to discover there’s nothing ordinary about the disappearance of two beautiful sisters from Minnesota and an estranged heiress who has never touched her eight-figure fortune.
While Madeline’s partner, Mike Delaney, heads down to Los Angeles to search for his cousin’s vanished girlfriend and her sister, Madeline heads to San Luis Obispo in hopes of picking up a twelve-year-old trail at a Catholic boarding school.
Their separate pursuits lead them into a world where a frightening reality hides behind a glossy veneer. With several lives hanging in the balance, Mike and Madeline are faced with daunting odds and ruthless criminals who will kill to keep what they have taken.
“Girl Trap” is the third book in the Madeline Dawkins series.

About the author
A lifelong reader, Cynthia Hamilton turned to writing in 2000 as a means of coping with a debilitating illness. She now has 13 books in print, all of which are available on Amazon. In addition to THE MADELINE DAWKINS MYSTERY SERIES, she writes general fiction and some memoir: FINDING RUTH and ONCE UPON A LYME...A TALE OF TWO JOURNEYS.
The Madeline Dawkins Series has really captured her imagination. Madeline’s dual careers as private investigator and event planner to the Santa Barbara elite keep her on her toes. All the books in the series can be read as standalones.
Cynthia shares where she finds inspiration for her books at Chaucer's Bookstore with Justine Hamilton, and on SPEAK UP TALK RADIO with host Pat Rullo. You can listen to and view the interviews via the links below:

While Madeline meets their new client for details about a missing heiress whose fortune is worth millions, Mike's cousin, Jesse, hires him to learn the whereabouts of his missing girlfriend. Both cases are off to a good start. Madeline knows enough of the PI side of business to know where to start looking and what questions to ask, as does Mike. But what Mike soon learns about Jesse's missing girlfriend is enough to leave one to wonder what he's gotten himself in to.
As Madeline gets closer to learning more about the missing heiress, she finds herself coming up with more questions than answers. Enough so that she is soon left to wonder not only what happened to the woman missing for the past 10 years, but if there is an alternate reason her client suddenly wants her daughter found and brought to her.
With Mike getting closer to what may be a terrible conclusion for his cousin's girlfriend, and Madeline digging deeper into the lives of some who'd rather remain anonymous, both are left asking themselves if they have suddenly gotten more than they bargained for. And it will take more than experience and luck to see both cases through to the end.
This is my 3rd book in the Madeline Dawkins Mystery Series and they keep getting better! The characters have such shining personalities I am left hoping to meet them in person. The author keeps the reader piqued with interest and no spoilers. Makes me want to be a PI myself, but perhaps in another life. I look forward to Book 4, as will you.
Keep on reading!
Two intertwining mysteries built back and forth throughout the book to their individual climaxes, keeping me reading, as I had to know what would happen next! The surprise twist at the end has left me wondering how Madeline might use her newly acquired “skill” to solve her next case.
Thanks, Cynthia for an entertaining read!

As ever, stylish author, Cynthia Hamilton, writes with aplomb, bringing her fans another dramatic serving in which Madeline Dawkins takes centre stage as the valorous female lead.
Madeline and Mike (her dependable business partner and part-time action man), are each tasked with a separate missing person case.
Mike’s assignment is brought to him by cousin Jesse, whose girlfriend has inexplicably vanished without a trace.
In similitude, but entirely unrelated, Madeline is approached by wealthy ice queen, Elise Cavanaugh, who wishes to locate an estranged daughter who has curiously walked away from a life of money and privilege. Maddy senses that Mrs Cavanaugh is withholding information, but to what end?
Mike’s search leads to rumours of the worst kind of exploitation possible, somehow linked to 'The Stingray', one of L.A.’s most chichi nightspots.
Meanwhile, Maddie’s investigation is going nowhere as she encounters a wall of silence and numerous dead ends. And what are we to make of slippery science teacher, Richard Caymus? (who I imagined looking like Robert Redford in his prime). Dawkins will need to draw upon all of her sleuthing skills to get to the bottom of this.
As events unfold, I was as much in the dark about Mrs Cavanaugh’s intentions as Maddie – which led us into a very clever plot twist that neither of us saw coming!
Every Cynthia Hamilton book is a cause for celebration and I’m keen to see if Mike and Maddie’s relationship will develop into something more meaningful. It’s clearly evident that she loses her mojo whenever he's not around.
This book, like the others before it, is an intriguing read smoothly written.
Bravo, Cynthia Hamilton!
Ms. Hamilton's latest offering has a gripping opening which will hook you straightaway (perhaps 'Reader Trap' might have been a more appropriate title?). Los Angeles-based Madeline Dawkins is damaged but resolute following her most recent adventure. We are quickly inducted into her world and her sometimes-opaque relationship with her business partner/"sex toy" Mike Delaney. Both are quickly embroiled in fiendishly difficult and potentially life-threatening cases. From then on until the final breath-holding denouement, the reader is party to the recurring collisions of private and professional matters (as in all good mystery novels), and where all is not as it first seems.
Written with charm and interspersed with a sly humour, 'Girl Trap' certainly keeps you turning the pages. I commend it to lovers of puzzling plots and family turmoils - with a soupcon of romance on the side.
Clearly, this is part of a series, but it wasn’t too difficult to figure out Madeline’s past. I haven’t read the first two volumes, but to me, it may have been an advantage. It amused me to put together the back story from the current happenings.
Hamilton puts her story together in a convincing fashion, although the double strain of two missing women makes for complications.
Despite the striking plot, the narrative failed to excite me. I can’t pinpoint exactly what gave me a sense of being let down. Was it the omniscient narrator, telling me Madeline’s feelings? Was it too many adjectives? A remote third-person narrative can work, but in my opinion, it works better in other genres. Three and a half stars.
