After sweeping awards season, Da’Vine Joy Randolph walked the Met Gala steps for the first time in a denim creation from Gap—a refreshing twist on this year’s “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” theme. Instead of going the floral route like many of her peers, the Academy Award winner’s 2024 Met Gala gown was a more elegant iteration of the A-line jean dress. Custom designed by Zac Posen, Joy Randolph’s Gap dress mixed design elements from the 1960s and the 1700s for a gown that was simultaneously fresh and nostalgic.

The Holdovers star’s 18th century-inspired "Gap couture" gown almost looked like it belonged on the set of Bridgerton with its elegant off-the-shoulder design with a square neckline, a structured corset-inspired bodice, pleats throughout, and a medieval trumpet sleeve, all in a dark denim wash. However, Posen’s references to Gap’s iconic 1969 jeans were clear in some more modern elements that made the design feel fresh and even slightly casual. Joy Randolph’s Met Gala dress featured distressed denim lining on the neckline, along her flared sleeves, and edging the curves of her generously pleated skirt. Pops of a lighter denim wash could be seen in the sleeves and mixed in with the darker fabric of her skirt, giving a technicolor view of Gap’s different 1969 jeans.

Joy Randolph, who posed with a Banana Republic-clad Posen on the ombre Met Gala carpet, went for classic princess vibes for her beauty look. Her middle-parted long, auburn hair reached down past her waist and was styled into effortless waves that The Little Mermaid’s Ariel would be proud of. The actress complemented her dress with a bold blue-hued smokey eye and winged eyeliner, and accentuated the rest of her features with subtle contour and peach tones. The icing on the cake was her light blue bejeweled manicure, which featured rhinestones and delicate paintings of flowers in a nod to the evening’s theme.
