the tinted photos yes, gave it a mystical or fantasy tone but also conveyed that it was a true story about real people and bird.
and the emphasis on what we do with our lives, ie sing our song, rather than cliches about where the dead bird or loved people are today.

book about life and death and how we choose to view it. Life goes on after death and we should continue singing.
I also loved the way she hand painted the black and white pictures of her granddaughters. This is a lovely book.
It's a huge talent for someone to be able to take such great photographs and hand-tint them with photo oils so expertly -- and that is one of the really enjoyable aspects of this book...looking at the detail in these gorgeous photographs.
As for the story itself, it's a personal (and true) story originally intended as a gift from Lange to her granddaughters (the girls featured in the photos). It was clearly a very personal gift and a retelling of past experiences from one generation to the next, which now many more can enjoy.
The only thing I would caution is that I feel the story is most appropriate for an older child, certainly at least 8 or 9 years of age, as it does briefly deal with some slightly mature themes (a mention of death, for example) and some aspects would definitely go right over the head of a younger child.
A child of eight or nine would also appreciate the photographs more than a younger child would.
All in all, very happy with the purchase and would definitely recommend.
