Maria Ewing, 1950–2022

The Metropolitan Opera mourns the death of Maria Ewing, a highly compelling artist who sang leading roles with the company for more than two decades. Between her 1976 debut as Cherubino in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and her final Met appearance in 1997 as Marie in Berg’s Wozzeck, she brought her distinctive vocalism and intense dramatic commitment to the Met stage nearly 100 times. Of the five new productions she headlined, her performance as Blanche de la Force in John Dexter’s landmark 1977 staging of Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites was particularly acclaimed. We extend our deepest sympathies to her daughter, the actress Rebecca Hall, and other family and friends.
