      Critics Consensus

Bird Box never quite reaches its intriguing potential, but strong acting and an effectively chilly mood offer intermittently creepy compensation.

Peter Rainer FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) Should have been called "Bird-brained." Sep 12, 2019 Full Review Kristen Lopez Zimbio Finale aside, Bird Box is a taut thriller that keeps you hooked. Feb 24, 2019 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Pajiba Bird Box, led by a strong Sandra Bullock, does a solid job of telling a story that compares the desire to destroy oneself with the constantly challenging nature of being a parent. Feb 7, 2019 Full Review Nyle Coleman InSession Film Bullock is the one that really shines here, she does an outstanding job and her performance made me realize how much I miss seeing her on-screen. She has a certain kind of charisma and presence... Rated: B+ May 9, 2024 Full Review Swetha Ramakrishnan Firstpost Bird Box toes the line. It holds your attention. It lets your imagination run wild, and sparks a ticker of running questions while you're engrossed with what's happening on screen. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 10, 2023 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast There's a lot to like about Bier's direction, though some of screenwriter Heisserer's adaptation choices don't always work. Thankfully Bullock and the mass death sequence are great, even if the film essentially has to do a soft reboot afterwards. Rated: 3/5 Jul 14, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Rebekah P Read the book. This is a case where the book is far superior. The movie just wasn't that good. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/16/24 Full Review Calvin T All around great movie 🎬 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/14/24 Full Review Spike G While quiet place was the better one bird box is still enjoyable enough to watch even if it could have been better Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/06/24 Full Review Jeff M This is a somewhat effective, frequently engaging but not particularly memorable thriller that many will undoubtedly compare to the superior A QUIET PLACE which opened earlier in the year. Supporting characters and performances range from good to overwrought, and I didn't think the non-linear framing device was necessary or particularly enhanced the experience. It's certainly a good time-passer on a snowy afternoon, but I doubt you'll remember much about it a day or two later. SPOILER ALERT: Just a note to filmmakers in the future - when you have a priceless commodity like Sarah Paulson, don't relegate her to a glorified cameo. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Takis T Starts off being very interestingly, but then it slowly derails into agony for the viewer, and not because of the suspense. If you want to watch an apocalyptic gem go for Leave the World Behind. Bird Box is a dud. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/07/24 Full Review Alec B The movie has some effective set pieces, more than I was anticipating actually. Unfortunately the screenplay is filled with cliches and the world building is too vague. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/05/24 Full Review Read all reviews
