The Rat Motel first appeared in 2016 as a collective dream sustained by brothers Seth and Clayton Peacock. After a speedy and unanimous decision to drop the undeniably pretentious article “The,” Rat Motel quickly became a staple of the Columbus, Ohio DIY scene with their massive dual-cylinder live sets and infectious buzz rock recordings. They have since half-relocated to Brooklyn but still host RATFEST annually in Columbus. Fan favorite “Dog” is featured in the film “Poser” (released last summer out of Oscilloscope Labs) and their debut studio album “The Rat Motel” (the “The” had to come back somehow) was released in summer 2023. It’s a dizzying peek into a tangled underworld of stories and dreams, using the blunt force of their live show to graft intricately satisfying songwriting onto carefully orchestrated darkness that would make Nick Cave proud.

Partygirl

partygirl is an imaginative, maximalist, feminist rock band based in Brooklyn. The band is formed by Pagona Kytzidis (songwriting/lead vocals/rhythm guitar/keyboards), Francesca Pastore (production/lead guitar), Claire Lin Jenkins (orchestral arrangements/violin/backing vocals), Jonathan Ashley (drums/percussion), Andrew Jordan (bass), and Jenna Love (alto saxophone).

Through creating unique and forward-looking music, partygirl centers intentional and creative storytelling through progressive, genre-bending song composition and lyrics that combine feminist praxis, emotional rawness, and dark comedy. Since early 2023, the band’s energetic and emotional shows have stormed the stages of venues across in New York City and the Northeast, including Baby’s All Right, the Sultan Room, Brooklyn Made, Union Pool, and Mercury Lounge, to name a few. Their highly-anticipated debut full-length project, I’m So Charming, I Forgot Who I Was, is set to release in Fall 2024.

Its shareholders include Chris Harth (Vocals, Keys, Guiar), Sami Habib (Guitar), Gaetano Lardieri (Drums), and Mario Marques (Bass). They will one day rule the earth and control most major waterways and the distribution of ethanol. Their efforts exist online and they have managed to enrich themselves off of unsuspecting fans across the country.

Blasting onto the punk scene at 3000 PSI, high energy rippers Power Washer are peeling the paint off with their latest DIY contribution Everyone Laughs. With this addition, these Baltimore punks have expanded their sound beyond their post-punk roots, pulling in more shoegaze-like texture, heavier early post-rock riffs, and 80’s New York No Wave skronk- delivering their fans a jaw-dropping and explosive artifact. While heavier and more experimentally elastic, the group manages to retain their knack for catchy hooks and memorable riffing. Standing on decades of underground and outsider sonic history, Blind Equation is the pinnacle evolution of the, until recently, obscure genres, nintendocore and cybergrind that were birthed in the Myspace era of the early '00's. 90's grindcore, Gen Z hyperpop, and Castlevania-esque video game soundtracks collide at blurring speeds under the keyboard of Blind Equation, and the subsequent amalgamation of otherwise completely incompatible styles is utterly heavenly (though, admittedly, jarring upon first listen). This deliciously digital sonic soup is comprised of the completely maximized forms of its influences and audible ingredients. The blasts: blistering, the vocals: scathing, the synths: from dirge-y dungeon depths to bombastic boss battles. Ultra Deluxe

Part screamo, part chiptune, overtly 8-bit, and always aggressive, Ultra Deluxe displays a wide variety of instrumentation. The anticipated synthesizers give way to harmonica, distortion and orchestra strings dance in a noise punk ode to Nintendo. A dark yet uplifting tone defined by driving bass lines and screams that echo the struggles of the proletariat.

Wifey

Wifey is a Brooklyn power-pop band formed by Teddy Grey and Carly Kerr, two hot dorks who prove that the theater-kid to punk-rocker pipeline is still claiming innocent victims. After working together on an R-rated Garfield musical (don’t ask), the two bonded over a mutual love of bubblegrunge, emo, and DIY, and began crafting the catchiest songs ever written. They were soon joined in marriage by Mickey Blurr on lead guitar, and Chris Canieso on drums, and the rest is history. The honeymoon phase never has to end with Wifey, thanks to their earworm hooks, enticingly questionable lyrics, and lovely harmonies that could only come from the happiest of marriages. Sex Mex

Sex Mex is the music of Clark Gray. It was started in 2021 with the idea of doing as much as possible with as few people as possible. It’s easy enough to multitrack everything, but making a band sound good live with hardly anybody on stage can be quite the challenge. However, this approach has made it to where Sex Mex can operate in a DIY fashion with ease. Trial and error have been a constant in Sex Mex. During the first 2 years, things were changing so often that people thought it was a schtick. In reality, it was just a result of experimenting like crazy and trying to find a sound that worked.

Sex Mex is a punk band with some power pop and glam rock thrown into the mix. It is simultaneously catchy and abrasive. They accomplish this with the help of a BOSS-RC3. God bless the BOSS-RC3.

Slomo Sapiens

Slomo Sapiens originated back in 2016 when lead guitarist & frontman Ceallaigh Manaaki moved across the planet from New Zealand to America. If you believe in horoscopes, ghosts, and fairy tales, you might think it was fate that Ceallaigh met Greg Geiger (bass) and Jon Pritchard (drums) within his first week in Philadelphia. The three piece dropped their debut EP Hot Milk in 2018 as a concise thesis on Psych, Garage, and Sludge Rock.

As the band evolved, they dug deeper into a psychedelic abyss and crafted their first LP Cabin Fever Dreams. The aptly titled record’s release coincidentally paired with the entire world shutting down for the first time in March of 2020. With no end in sight, the band couldn’t help but feel that fate had played a dirty trick on them this time. The darkest moments on CFD highlight the horrors of isolation with references to Kenneth Anger & Allister Crowley while pulling musical influence from The Cramps & The 13th Floor Elevators.

Since then, the boys explored their Stoner Metal alter egos on Sl​ö​mos Vol 1 in 2021 and joined forces with multi-instrumentalist Michael Sanzo (Dawn Drapes, XIXIX) to expand their presence in Philadelphia’s prolific and infinite music scene.
The band has finally finished their sophomore album The Holy Babble and has already released the first single ‘Tongues ii’. With ‘Tongues ii’, the band unleashes their maximalist sound, complete with a Krautrock-inspired intro, swarming textures, and an aphotic depth of layers. It's almost as if the psych rock monster they created has mutated, sprouted a few extra legs, and reached a new stage of evolution. A stage post-sapien.

Five Hundred Bucks

Five Hundred Bucks is a Philadelphia band whose members have played in bands such as The Holy Mess, Captain, We’re Sinking, TeenAgers, Seagulls—and the list goes on. In fact, just as the project started taking shape, Jeff Riddle, the songwriter behind Five Hundred Bucks, was asked to take part in another creative project altogether: a movie called Uncle Peckerhead and its soundtrack. Maybe it’s this reason that $500, the band’s first full-length, feels so narrative, full of characters and conflicts—stories that Riddle sings about both his own experience and experiences of those around him. There’s a sepia, Americana tone that tints the the punk-rock restlessness on $500—a warbling organ solo here, a bluesy guitar lick there, stripes of acoustic guitar—and only serves to darken the already dirty the edges of this album. “The record, on a whole, has an air of gleeful nihilism,” says Riddle, “or dare I even say optimistic nihilism to it, whatever the hell that means. There’s a lot of ‘I really want to give up or quit, but I don’t know what the hell else I would do so I might as well stick with it,' which is a sentiment that I’ve felt when it comes to music or just even life in general.” It’s this vulnerability that makes Five Hundred Bucks’s music feel so honest and relatable—and why $500 feels so refreshing in an era where appearances seem so important. Better still is knowing that this album, which already stems from a lush vine of creativity, will likely cultivate even more rich, meaningful music in one way or another.

Slow Funeral

Slow Funeral is the alias of South Carolina musician Mary Norris, who is known for her abraded musical and lyrical vulnerability. Her alt-rock project is a marriage of 90s influences such as Radiohead, The Cranberries, Jeff Buckley, and Nirvana paired with Americana influences Jason Isbell, Bruce Springsteen, and John Prine. Slow Funeral shows have been making early impact in the southeast, having shared the stage with acts like Slothrust, Owen (Mike Kinsella of American Football), Chase Petra, Molly Martin, and more.

In 2020, after Jordy Searcy made a name as a homegrown touring act and a landmark songwriter for his generation, he left Nashville behind and hopped into his touring-van-turned-camper and drove to the west coast. The 2022 album Daylight is the sound of that uncertain adventurous time, surfing up and down the west coast, writing songs in remote outdoor locations in solitude for weeks at a time and touring the country with friends.

All of that changed in February 2022 when he met his now-wife, Michel Janse. A previous album titled “UFO” had been written, recorded and scrapped, because jordy found a new direction-The End Of Us.

The End Of Us is an album about endings and beginnings-the end of the adventure a single musician in his 20’s discovering the world and taking risks, and the beginning of building a life with the person you want to spend it with. The end of relentlessly chasing a career in a music city, and the beginning of a quiet creative life in the small beach town of Oceanside, CA where jordy now lives. For his wife Michel, this record also has special meaning-this is her 2nd marriage, and the record explores her story and her healing process.

Enlisting the help of longtime friend and hometown buddy Phillip Vo to write and produce, this record is energetic, California summery, Beatlesy, and fresh organic pop all in one. Relying on craft, inspiration, and fun, “The End Of Us” is a no-skips good time.
