Danny Murphy says only one Tottenham player gets in his Team of the Season and it’s not Micky van de Ven

Danny Murphy has included just one Tottenham Hotspur player in his 2023/24 Premier League Team of the Season.

Spurs started the campaign in magnificent style, but their performances recently have been really poor. They’ve won just three of their last 10 games in the Premier League, which includes a run of five defeats in their last six fixtures.

That is really disappointing if you’re a Tottenham fan, but there are still a lot of positives to take from this season. Murphy has had his say on one of them.

Danny Murphy picks Destiny Udogie over Micky van de Ven in his Team of the Season

Tottenham signed Destiny Udogie from Udinese in the summer of 2022, but he was sent back to Stadio Friuli for a year on loan.

The Italian returned to North London before the start of the 2023/24 season, and he has been magnificent under Ange Postecoglou.

Udogie became Spurs’ first-choice left-back even though he hadn’t played a single game in the Premier League before the start of this campaign.

There were a few doubts about how he would cope, but the 21-year-old quickly became one of Tottenham’s most important players. Michael Owen said he has never seen another player like him.

Danny Murphy, a former Tottenham midfielder, has been really impressed with Udogie this season, so much so that the Italian is the only Spurs player in his Team of the Season.

He said on talkSPORT: “Left-back, I think Udogie for me, young lad brought in, first season in the Premier League at Tottenham.

“I know he’s been injured the last few weeks but overall his season has been terrific. Been a breath of fresh air, powerful, adventurous, skilful, can defend as well, quick.”

Murphy picked William Saliba and Virgil van Dijk over Micky van de Ven in his side, but he still praised the Tottenham defender.

He said: “The two centre-halves, I thought the only one who came to mind who I think deserves a mention but didn’t get in was [Micky] Van de Ven, another one at Tottenham, first season has been good.”

One key stat shows Tottenham are terrible without Destiny Udogie

Destiny Udogie has played a key part for Tottenham this season.

The Italy international has played 28 games in the Premier League, and although he has made a few mistakes, most of his performances have been impressive.

Tottenham have been so reliant on Udogie at left-back that without him, they have struggled.

The 21-year-old has missed nine games for Tottenham in the Premier League this season, and Spurs’ record in those fixtures read three wins and six losses. That’s a win rate of 33.3 per cent, which is shocking.

That proves Tottenham really struggle when Udogie is unavailable. Sadly for them, he will miss the final game of the season as well due to an injury.
