I bought this book for my daughter, who rented out her first home, when she moved to a different city and bought another home. Lots of fantastic information on how to set up your bookkeeping, and advice on things like repairing things rather than replacing them to get maximum write-offs, etc.

A CPA can only deal with what you've done after the fact, so even if you use a CPA, I suggest getting this book, too, so you don't make mistakes regarding things you could have written off, if only you'd known better...

Covers being able to write off a home office in your home, for doing your rental business, too, and how to maximize that write-off. You can write off part of your current mortgage, utilities, etc. But, you have to do it right, and this book tells you how to do it right.

Worth it's weight in gold, in my opinion.

As a former investing neophyte, I have to rate The Truth About Money 3rd Edition highly... Edelman is very good at making the complex accessible to Joe and Jane Average. Many other financial writers could learn from him.

HOWEVER, be warned that Edelman has said on his radio show that he's working on the 4th Edition, and that it'll be out sometime in December... no doubt with the recent Great Recession(tm) and financial meltdown, some things have changed more than a bit.

For instance, stocks have been anything but a consistent great bet over the past DECADE (3rd Edition was published in '03, well before the trend became clear), so it'll be interesting to see how Ric addresses this (or if he does at all). He seems to have majorly changed his tune on indexing and index funds as well... he used to hate 'em, now he likes them, and recommends that you buy them through ETFs (lower fees).

So if you can wait, save yourself some $$$ and get the 4th Edition. No doubt it'll be good and informative reading.

Do you wonder why there are so many persons struggling with financial problems? The answer is simple yet only a few know the answer. We simply don't know the rules of the game. The problem also is that it is very difficult and time consuming to figure out the "Game of Money".
The good news about this book is that the author explains and clarifies a lot of myths and misunderstandings about money,investments,markets,stocks,mutual funds,taxes and a lot more about subjects directy related to money and wealth. Are you going to be rich after reading it? Maybe,maybe not, but I do know that you will turn into a well educated person regarding how to make sound financial decisions. I bought this book and I plan to keep it because the information is priceless. This is the kind of book that you read, reread it and then keep it for future reference.
