This article provides guidance on how to download the JunOS installation package to a Juniper Networks switch using URL whenever the switching platform has access to Internet.

The switch must be upgraded and the same has access to Internet, but unfortunately the site does not allow USB sticks in the building and there is no current host that can transfer the file to the switch remotely. The only available option is to download the JunOS installation package directly from Juniper Downloads website.

Once you have reached the URL of the Juniper Downloads website, copy the URL and the name of the installation package (.tgz) and run the following operational command on the Juniper Networks switch. In this example for illustration purposes, we are downloading the version 21.4R3-S6.5, although this process is applicable to any Junos and Junos SR release.

{master:0}
user@switch> file copy "https://cdn.juniper.net/software/junossr/21.4R3-S6/jinstall-ex-4300-21.4R3-S6.5-signed.tgz?SM_USER=user&__gda__=1714776411_b30ea72124744070030a134e4511262d" /var/tmp/jinstall-ex-4300-21.4R3-S6.5-signed.tgz

/var/tmp//...transferring.file.........uU2L6p/ 6% of 248 MB 2391 kBps

Note: It is important to use the correct quotation marks as it may lead to incorrect order of the command is not done correctly. The incorrect quotation marks are “” while the correct quotation marks are "". The URL must be placed between the quotation marks and they must be opened and closed before moving the cursor to the middle to paste the URL, otherwise the system may understand that the URL is part of the command's syntax as opposed to being the URL itself.
