Scores earned for customer service, claims handling, and other subcategories, plus below-national-average rates, indicate Geico could be a good car insurance option for many drivers. It may be especially appealing for those who seek competitive rates in driver categories such as teen drivers or drivers with a speeding ticket or accident. Plus, Geico offers a long list of possible discounts, which may help policyholders realize further savings.
Geico’s sample rates and survey responses around customer satisfaction help it earn a 3.9 out of 5 rating in our analysis.
Geico earns the sixth-place spot in our subcategory rating for customer service. Our results, which rely on survey responses and other sources, show USAA scores the highest for customer service and Auto-Owners is a close second. When survey respondents were asked how satisfied they were with the customer service they received from Geico, 53% of them noted they were completely satisfied with the service provided, and over 53% said they were completely satisfied with the ease of contacting customer service at Geico.
Geico ties for sixth when it comes to claims handling, earning a score of 4.1 out of 5.0. USAA and Auto-Owners scored highest in this category. Over 45% of survey respondents were completely satisfied with the ease of filing a claim with Geico, while almost 55% were completely satisfied at how their claim was resolved. When it came to getting updates about their claims from Geico, 45% responded they were completely satisfied with the updates.
Geico also ties for sixth among the insurers in our rating for customer loyalty, with Auto-Owners taking the top spot and USAA a close second. Among survey respondents, 82% noted they were either likely or very likely to renew their policies with Geico. Just over 77% said they were either likely or very likely to recommend Geico to someone looking for auto insurance.
Geico is the fourth best car insurance company for senior drivers in our subcategory rating, earning a score of 4.1 out of 5. Although the company didn’t have the lowest sample rates for senior drivers on our list, its rates are 7% below the national average for both male and female adults aged 60. Note that in rating companies for senior drivers, we relied on survey responses from participants 55 and older.
Geico offers an array of discounts for its policyholders, ranging from good driver to multivehicle. It is No. 6 for discounts among companies in our rating. About 30% of respondents said they were completely satisfied with the number of discounts Geico offers.
Our study found a sample annual rate for Geico of $1,778, which is less expensive than several other companies included in our study and about 14% less than the national average. Geico posted competitive rates across all demographics compared to the national average, and was significantly less expensive than the national average for both male and female teen drivers. Geico also posted rates lower than the national average for other categories, including drivers with a speeding ticket or accident.
Geico doesn’t have the least expensive average rates for 17-year-old female and male drivers, but it isn’t the most expensive either in this category and is well below the national average. For 17-year-old female drivers, Erie has the lowest average annual rate we found at $3,478. It also has the lowest sample rates for 17-year-old male drivers, averaging $4,351 annually. It’s worth noting that Erie only sells car insurance in 12 states and Washington, D.C.

Geico’s rates for young adult drivers are about 20% below the national average, according to our research. USAA posted the lowest rates in our analysis for female and male young adult drivers, with an annual rate of $1,612 and $1,685, respectively. But USAA car insurance is only available to military members, veterans, and their families. Nationwide had the second-lowest rate for single 25-year-old female drivers, averaging $1,892 annually, while Erie had the second-lowest for single 25-year-old male drivers at $1,898.

Geico’s rates are, on average, about 12% less than the national average for married 35-year-old female drivers and 10% less for married 35-year-old male drivers. USAA posted the lowest rates for married adult drivers, averaging $1,224 per year for female adult drivers and $1,232 for male drivers in this age group.

Geico’s sample premiums are 7% below the national average for both female and male 60-year-old married drivers. USAA had the least expensive averages: $1,125 per year for females and $1,131 for males in this age group. Erie also had much lower rates, with average annual costs of $1,277 for 60-year-old female drivers and $1,224 for males.

Geico’s rates after one speeding ticket were not the lowest among the insurers reviewed, but were 8% lower than the national average. The lowest rates were found with USAA, with an average annual rate of $1,623. Erie also had lower sample rates, with an average of $1,765 per year.

Geico is No. 5 and State Farm is No. 7 when it comes to the lowest national average rates among companies in our analysis. When you dig a little deeper, State Farm is more expensive in many of the driver categories we studied than Geico. Geico is cheaper on average for drivers with a speeding ticket, and in all of the age groups we analyzed – teen drivers, young adults, adults, and seniors.
State Farm does perform better in our subcategory for customer service compared to Geico, and is also ranked higher in terms of claims handling and customer loyalty.

Allstate earned the No. 6 spot (tied with American Family) with a score of 3.8 out of 5 in our rating of the best car insurance companies. Geico is No. 5 in our rating. Allstate and Geico did earn the same ratings for overall customer loyalty.
Allstate has the highest sample premium among all the insurers in our rating, with an annual rate of $3,374 overall. Allstate was also above the national average across every category of drivers we studied.

Keep in mind that while USAA often has the lowest rates and highest customer service scores among companies we researched, it only serves the military community and not everyone qualifies for membership.
