JOHN Stewart
Earl of Lennox
(87) SIR JOHN STEWART OR STUART OF DERNELY OR DARNLEY was created Lord Darnley (S.) about 1461, and about 1473 assumed the title of EARL OF LENNOX (S.).
John Stewart´s marriage has been a source of genealogical confusion. He is recorded as having contracted to marry Margaret Montgomerie, the daughter of Alexander Montgomerie, 1st Lord Montgomerie and Margaret Boyd, by indenture on 15 May 1438, as both parties were under age. She, however, appears to have died young. Ultimately, he married another Margaret Montgomerie in 1460, who was not the same individual, but the fraternal niece of the former, who was the daughter of Alexander, Master of Montgomerie (son of the 1st Lord) and Elizabeth Hepburn.
John had with Margaret Montgomerie eight recorded children:

Arms: of James Stewart of Cardonald on Seal, ´57´.I and 4. Three fteurs-de-lis within a bordure. 2 and 3. A fess chequy within a bordure. En surtout, A saltirebetween four roses (Macdonald).
Arms: on his Seal, 1490.-1 and 4. Three fleurs-de-lis (Aubigny). 2 an~3. A fess chequy within a bordure charged with eight buckles (Stewart and Bonkyl). En surtout, A saltire between four roses (Lennox) (Laing).
