Forget, if you can, anything you may have heard about Scott Mckenzie. As an artist he is sometimes lazily dismissed as a one hit wonder, yet he had a career in music before and after the phenomenal success of San Francisco. An aversion to life in the limelight post San Francisco led Mckenzie to abandon his considerable fame for obscurity throughout the 1970's. However, he did not abandon music completely, later touring with The Mamas and the Papas and co writing one of the biggest selling hit singles of the 1980's for the Beach Boys. Mckenzie's remarkable talent as a player, singer and song writer is captured on a number of recordings made during the 1960's, but nowhere more so than on Stained Glass Morning released in 1970. Mckenzie, who plays piano and twelve string and wrote all the songs for the album, was joined in the studio by some notable session men, Ry Cooder among them. The resulting album is remarkable on a number of levels. There's the voice, sonorous and demanding of close attention. The quality of the writing, consistent and at times, not just good, but strikingly so. And at it's core lies the enigma of a gifted man who wrote one beautiful album before seeking out the quiet life in Virginia Beach. While other artists have covered songs from Stained Glass Morning, it has never emerged from the mists of decades past. As an album, lost or otherwise, it offers much more than a poignant symmetry between life and art. Luckily for us then, that we can hear it in its entirety on this Raven released CD.

NOT FIRST TIME RELEASE ON CD.

Though the Amazon product overview description states this is a 24 track c.d. & first time release on c.d. this is inaccurate.
This is only a 22 track c.d.
Technically this is a re-issue, this was originally released on c.d. in 2001 on the Raven label.
Though an Australian label, it was easily available on line & at all good record stores back then.
The only difference between that issue & this re-issue is that the booklet picture has been changed.
Apart from that, this is an excellent re-release (I won't even take 1 star off for this error) of Scott's 1970 album, with a great informative booklet about Scott's life & career which is worth the price alone. My own personal belief is that this is a lost gem & deserves reappraisal.
I'm not saying don't get this, in fact if you like this sort of music & Scott McKenzie & you don't have the original 2001 release then go ahead and buy this straight away. It's certainly a 5 star listen.

Scott's real name was Phil Blondheim, but he became Scott McKenzie when he and John Phillips formed a group called The Smoothies. This group only lasted a few months. They disbanded, but Scott and John formed a trio called The Journeymen. They lasted long enough to release three albums and a couple singles before they also disbanded. While John formed the New Journeymen and (later) the Mamas and Papas, Scott went solo, but made no real impact until the Mamas and Papas became successful. At that point, John helped his old friend out. They discussed various ideas and it seems that Scott gave John the basic idea for the song that eventually made Scott famous, although John wrote the song entirely on his own.
Scott is not quite a one-hit wonder, as Like an old time movie (the follow-up to San Francisco) made the top thirty in America and just charted in Britain, but Scott couldn't handle the fame. He recorded an album in 1967 (including the hits, plus a mix of covers and original songs) and another in 1970 (for which Scott wrote all the songs) but neither made much impact.
This compilation begins with one track by the Smoothies and two by the Journeymen. The remainder of the tracks include the best of his solo music, although it must be said that nothing else is anything like San Francisco. The other songs are typical sixties folk music. It makes for interesting listening if (like me) you enjoy sixties folk, but if all you want is San Francisco, buy that song on a various artists compilation.
