History
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team defeated the top-seeded Titans in a phenomenal game in Oshkosh Thursday. In the Warhawks' second game of the WIAC Tournament, UWW came back to win 2-1 in an absolute thriller.
The first nine batters of the contest were retired as the teams settled into the game. In the bottom of the second, UW-Oshkosh strung together three singles leading to the first run of the game and a 1-0 Titan advantage.
That score held until the top of the sixth. With one out,
Kaitlyn Weidemann (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) tagged a double to deep center field. Once she got to second, she turned toward the UWW dugout, yelling "let's go" in celebration and the Warhawks did just that. A wild pitch had Weidemann advancing to third. After the second out of the frame,
Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) blasted a liner into the left field to knot the game 1-1.
Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) followed with another single to left.
Taylor Koehler (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) made it three consecutive singles with a hard shot through the right side that had Kostroski cruising around third and sliding into home for the 2-1 lead.
Rhiann Dick (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) went back into the circle in the top of the sixth. She capped a fantastic game in the circle with a groundout before handing the ball off to closer extraordinaire
Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble). The sophomore got the final two outs of the inning via flyout - one on a deep shot that
Bella Eggert (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) tracked down at the warning track.
Kiera Jarrett opened the seventh with a double to right center but the Warhawks were not able to capitalize sending the teams into the bottom of the seventh with a one-run game.
The leadoff batter tagged a hard grounder in the 5-6 hole that
Meghan Dunning (Plainfield, Ill./South) made a fantastic diving stop on to keep the ball in the infield and hold the batter at first base. Dunning got the first out on a popup in the next at bat. Hock struck out the next batter for out number two. The final out of the game came on a flare to center field that Eggert caught on the run.
UWW blasted six hits in the game with Kostroski leading the squad going 2-3 at the plate.
Dick got the start and the win - striking out two and scattering five hits across 5.1 innings of work. Hock picked up the save - her second of the day and tenth of the season in the win.
