Lower school students participated in Big Bang of the Books, a reading club shared across WFS, Tatnall, and Tower Hill that includes more than 170 students!
Celebrations for the Class of 2024 have begun, and last night was Senior Exploration Night, where members of the Class of 2024 presented the projects they've been working on for the last month.

Higher Level International Baccalaureate biology students recently visit the ChristianaCare Gene Editing Institute where they worked in the learning lab to perform a CRISPR experiment (a technology used for editing genes) and toured the gene editing lab!

As part of our annual Wellness Day, organized by members of the Quaker Cares Committee, WFS middle and upper school students participated in various activities facilitated by faculty and staff members. Students enjoyed yoga, playing multiple sports, and jamming out in the band room.
Dr. Tracey Dennis-Tiwary, author of the book, Future Tense: Why Anxiety is Good for You (Even Though It Feels Bad) recently visited with WFS parents and faculty members. In her talk on anxiety in the context of education, Dr. Dennis-Tiwary, who is an anxiety researcher and bestselling author, discussed new perspectives on child anxiety.
The WFS boys’ lacrosse team defeated St. Andrew’s School on Saturday afternoon, 9-3! With their victory over the Saints, the Quakers finished undefeated in conference play and captured the DISC Championship for the second consecutive year.

The WFS boys' lacrosse team was invited to run a clinic with students at Ferris School. The Delaware Lacrosse Foundation and several members of the WFS community helped found the lacrosse team at Ferris seven years ago, and players have found the exchange very rewarding as they share their love of the game.
Seventh grade Chinese students visited Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library to learn more about its Chinese wallpaper and book collection, helping the students gain valuable insight into Chinese history and culture.
Sixth graders recently spent time off campus for a morning of service activities in the local community. These trips included volunteering at the Food Bank of Delaware, Faithful Friends Animal Rescue, Rockland Place, Guardian Angels Daycare, and Alapocas State Park.
During Earth Day at WFS, preschoolers worked on beautifying their playground and fourth graders picked up trash around the athletic facilities. We thank these students for their stewardship!
The lower school recently received soil from WasteWell, a local company that collects the lower school's compost. Students used the soil to re-pot classroom plants and will also contribute soil to the school garden!
Before the Class of 2024 heads off on their senior explorations next week, they attend a series of seminars ("Senior Seminars") aimed at giving them tools for adulthood.
The WFS Model UN Club, accompanied by faculty advisor Nick Childers, recently sent a delegation of five students to the inaugural Tower Hill Model UN Conference.
Upper school environmental science students built model carbon capture algae farms as part of their study of climate change mitigation. They developed ways to measure algae growth using microscopes and a spectrophotometer.

Pablo Charriez '24 recently presented about redlining and discriminatory housing practices to 10th grade English classes who are studying the topic while reading Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun.
Kindergarten students traveled to the Delaware Museum of Nature and Science and had a blast learning about the dryptosaurus (Delaware's dinosaur), seeing fossils, meeting a ball python, and more!

Lower school students had the opportunity to meet with author Sarah Weeks, who has written more than 60 books for young readers including the best-selling novels, Pie, Save Me a Seat and So B. It, which is now a feature-length film. Our 5th grade students shared and got feedback on first lines and stories based on picture prompts and writing techniques.
Donovan Aldridge '18 and Jack Hanson '18, both currently living in Europe, recently met in Granada, Spain, where they joined the parents of WFS Spanish teacher Dario Robles for dinner in their home!

Congratulations to Katie Bryan '24 who, after winning the WFS Shakespeare competition in January, qualified to compete in the Philadelphia English Speaking Union's branch competition at the Museum of the American Revolution. Katie's Shakespearean monologue and sonnet earned her third place and a $500 scholarship!
The WFS Mock Trial team had a great showing at this year's state competition. Temi Lufadeju '25, Scarlett Murphy '27, and Tess Wolf '24 all won gavels for best attorney. Best witness gavels went to Payton Altland '25, Lucy Cericola '25 (with two gavels), Carter Fenimore '25, and Abbie Thurlow '26.
Preschool students have been busy spreading Valentine's cheer, delivering Valentines to upper school students, faculty, and staff, and also at their Valentine "informance" this morning which gave family and friends a glimpse into the exciting activities that take place in their music classroom each week.
Middle schoolers experienced an interactive performance by Paco Rege and his group, Super Ngewel, with traditional African music, dance, songs, and story-telling. At the conclusion of the performance, Paco invited all of the students on stage to dance together!

When Kaylea Ann Donaghy, age 3, walked into Wilmington Friends Lower School in January, 2021, she was not aware that she may well be the ninth generation and 38th member of her family to attend or be involved with the oldest school in Delaware.
