1988

The year is 1962. The place is Willowpoint Falls. Nobody talks about what happened in the school cloakroom 10 years ago. Now, in the dead of night, Frankie Scarlatti is going to find out why.

Locked in a school closet during Halloween 1962, young Frank witnesses the ghost of a young girl and the man who murdered her years ago. Shortly afterward he finds himself stalked by the killer and is soon drawn to an old house where a mysterious Lady In White lives. As he discovers the secret of the woman he soon finds that the killer may be someone close to him.

This scared scared me as a kid so I was pretty anxious for rewatch... and I gotta say... Solid performances throughout, the set design is awesome, and it's drenched in foggy atmosphere I love. The dreaded rewatch after 20 something years was a success! Great little ghost story.

"What is the good of living when all that you love is gone?"
I was fairly spellbound throughout this expensive looking timepiece. I was shocked by the cinematography. Russell Carpenter is a brilliant photographer. Visually it felt like a Jeunet/Caro joint until those SFX kick in. Haha
You have to be in a specific mood for this. Thankfully I was. Autumnal vibrazioni in Willowpoint Falls. Frankie is seeing some unique apparitions. Christ. I'm surprised I never saw this.

My first rewatch of this one since it first came out on video.
It took me a while to pin down the aesthetic that LiW has working. It has an odd tone where everything is exaggerated and on-the-nose. Add in a bunch of corny, light-hearted humor. It feels very Disney live-action. Then there is a some real darkness. The horror, which is aimed for children, hits the mark well. And this film is positively bathing in rich autumnal atmosphere.
It's an unusual mix, but at the same time it felt very familiar, then it hit me about 2/3rds of the way through the film. This is a less refined, low-skilled version of what would become Tim Burton's aesthetic.

A children's ghost story with much more serious tone and atmosphere than that implies, this story tries very hard to tackle some serious themes (racism) but doesn't have the capacity to do it right. The blunt racism expressed here isn't unrealistic, exactly, but it ignores outright the more subtle forms and the institutionalized forms--there's no way a verdict of not guilty would come down in this context. But all of that is then used as nothing more than a prop in a narrative about a white kid's inspiration for his future as a horror writer, so its realism isn't even the biggest problem. Still, if they had shaved off that problematic part of the narrative, you would have a decent creepy kids horror story.

When wild shifts in tone work wonders.
Lady in White is somehow both a whimsical child-centric adventure-horror and a dead-serious social justice drama. The whiplash is real. One minute we’re getting 10 year olds riding bikes to a James Horner-ass score, and the next minute there’s anti-Black violence that wouldn’t be out of place in Malcolm X. No hyperbole, my jaw was wide open for that whole scene and for a minute afterwards.
Our main character is victim to bullying by kids and abuse by an adult, prompting them to resolve a years-old pattern of child murders by a killer in the community. But also in this movie’s (1960s-set) landscape is the Cuban missile crisis, child molestation, and a news reel…

Night #7 of Hooptober VIII.
I thought maybe I'd seen part of this a long time ago; the central plot seemed familiar, as did the shot from the poster, but as I got into it I'm not really sure that I had. This is a bit of a strange one; ambitious in both the plot and effects. There can be a bit of tonal whiplash as it takes the story to some incredibly dark, bleak places, far more so than I expected going in. Some of the green screen effects haven't aged the best, but that didn't stop them from going for it, which I can respect. It's drenched in atmosphere, with wonderful set design and rich lighting choices. The performances are all good as well. It's just perhaps a little bloated, though earnest all the same.

A supernatural seasonal treasure that should be a November 1st tradition in every home. Perfectly bridging the depressing gap between Halloween and Christmas.
Opening with overwhelming assault of Halloween sensory overload. Jack-o-lanterns, masks, candy corn, a rowdy grade school party, trees with leaves so bright and orange it will burn your retinas and a freight train of bullying, ghostly and attempted murder trauma experienced in a schoolhouse cloakroom.
It then transforms into a paranormal tinged murder-mystery bathed in the glow of Christmas tree lights and the candles in a cottage containing the local specter.
The warmth and comfort of a loving family (the Italian grandparents are hands down my favorite part of this movie.) Ghosts Desperately trying to gain closure. And the sinister threat of a very real, mysterious boogeyman. Culminates in a very cozy tale of childhood terror.

"Suddenly I felt a wind sweep through the darkness... chilling me to the bone"
I've been curious about Lady in White for a long time. Mainly due to me not doing my research and wanting to sift through it completely blind, I always assumed it was some uber creepy and hauntingly atmospheric ghost tale. It's weird cult status didn't help either. It's far from any of that.
It's obvious LaLoggia had a lot of ambition for this project and had a financial backing that gives it a great production value. All that ambition and passion leaves Lady in White a weird Frankenstein monster mash up of so many different ideas though that it turns out being a tonal mess. You…

A Warning up front for potential Viewers. Don’t decide whether or not you’ll see LADY IN WHITE based on its preview teaser. It is very poorly done, giving me the impression this was an “average” made-for-tv movie from the 1970’s. It is much better than that.

Although I had heard of the title, I knew nothing about LADY IN WHITE other than it was a ghost story. The title sounds Victorian Gothic … and, again, it is not. So, it resided on my HBOMax watchlist until the service advised that it would be leaving soon. Today, I decided that if it was anything like its preview, I could watch 15-minutes then switch to something good.
