The death penalty is an important theme in My Days of Mercy. Two women get to know each other during a demonstration of supporters and opponents. They like each other but have different opinions about the death penalty for personal reasons. As the women seek physical and mental rapprochement, the controversy becomes a possible and interesting divisive issue.

By connecting the death penalty to lesbian feelings, the film touches on a second theme. The coloring of both characters is unfortunately not very subtle and rather clichéd. One is openly lesbian with a swagger-like appearance. The other is secretly lesbian and has a template-like conservative background. The characterization is somewhat easy and simplistic, which in turn influences the seriousness of the death penalty subject in the film. That theme is of course treated, but is used much more as a stepping stone for a love affair than as a seriously controversial theme.

The two actresses are fun and do a good job. Ellen Page and Kate Mara are the names. The two ladies are on the film role as producers and seem to be non-sexual friends in real life. That friendship must have helped, because in the film they convincingly embody their love for each other.

Nice movie, but it's all too thick. So pre-chewed. Anyway, if you manage to ignore that somewhat, you end up with a pleasant film. A film with drama and feel good. A film that is easy to watch without being bothered by too much in-depth attention to the elementary themes that are present in the film.

A potentially very strong drama is only partially realized because it deals with two themes. The death penalty and homosexuality. As a result, the film occasionally loses balance, because one of the two subjects has to be thought of each time. A pity, because the film is very powerful at times and the ending is really sublime. Only as far as I'm concerned, the lesbian theme could have been a little less prominent. As much as I love to watch it. That felt more like a mandatory number because.... Euhh.. Yes.. No idea actually.

Too bad, because there is a very strong drama here, which only comes out at times. It never really gets bad, of course, but I would have liked to see it more gripping for my taste.
