Roxanne (1929–2024), Beat the Clock model and actress

by Eric San Juan

Dolores Rosedale, aka Roxanne, was a model and actress known for her time as an assistant on “Beat the Clock” and for appearing in “The Seven Year Itch” with Marilyn Monroe (1926–1962)

Roxanne’s legacy

Initially a fashion student at the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts, Dolores Rosedale – better known by her professional name, Roxanne – went into modeling after finishing second in 1947’s Miss Minneapolis beauty pageant. She moved to New York and studied under Lee Strasberg (1901– 1982) at The Actors Studio.

Her screen debut came in 1948 on the game show “Winner Take All” alongside Bud Collyer (1908–1969). This was followed by a tenure on “Beat the Clock,” also hosted by Collyer. For a time, she was popular enough to have had a doll created in her image, The Roxanne Doll, released in 1953 by the Valentine Company. Two years later, she appeared in Billy Wilder’s (1906–1982) hit film, “The Seven Year Itch,” starring Marilyn Monroe, in which Roxanne briefly played Elaine. She also performed on Broadway, acting in “A Hatful of Rain” in 1956 and “The Young Don’t Cry” in 1957.

Roxanne moved back to Minnesota in the late 1950s, doing modeling work and appearing in commercials, as well as raising her five children with businessman Tom Roddy. After their 1979 divorce, she wed Minneapolis judge and lawyer Stanley Shanedling.
