Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987) is my favorite John Hughes movie hands down!

John Candy and Steve Martin are at their best in Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987) and no matter how many times I watch this film, it’s amazing. There are so many classic scenes and quotes in this movie, and it’s just so good.

“You wanna hurt me? Go right ahead if it makes you feel any better. I'm an easy target. Yeah, you're right, I talk too much. I also listen too much. I could be a cold-hearted cynic like you... but I don't like to hurt people's feelings. Well, you think what you want about me; I'm not changing. I like... I like me. My wife likes me. My customers like me. 'Cause I'm the real article. What you see is what you get.”

“Hell of a game, hell of a game, Bears are going all the way this year.”

I knew you guys wouldn't let me down. This is the first thing I think of when this movie is mentioned. And there are many, many aspects of this amazing movie that are memorable.

We have a family tradition to watch this every Thanksgiving. When I think of it the first thing that always comes to mind is this fine line:

"She don't mind. She's short and skinny, but she's strong. Her first baby come out sideways. She didn't scream or nothin'."

u/gilestowler avatar

I'm from Europe and don't celebrate Thanksgiving, but I've got a little tradition where I watch it every year on Thanksgiving anyway

🐖 ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh 💩

So glad this quote is at the top where it belongs. I quote this one way too often and it's one of those movie quotes where people just think you're crazy if they don't know it.

YOU’RE GOING THE WRONG WAY!

u/Corndogeveryday avatar

“Oh he’s drunk. How would he know where we’re going?”

u/steiner1031 avatar

One of my favorite lines in any movie. And the way Steve Martin thinks about it and then agrees

u/Corndogeveryday avatar

“Ooookkkkkk thaaaaaaank youuuuuuu 👋 “

Your honor, I would like it know for the record that the witness made the "drinky drinky" motion.

Doesn’t John Candy turn into the devil for a moment in that scene? That just pushed me into fits of laughter at the theatre. Opening night!

Yeah. It's so random that it's just perfect

The whole Wichita scene is great!!! Comedy gold!!! From the Braidwood Inn to cousin Owen!

u/Corndogeveryday avatar

“I'm to drive you to Wichita to catch a train?”

“Yeah, we'd appreciate it.”

“Train don't run out of Wichita... unlessin' you're a hog or a cattle.”

[Clears his throat]

“People train runs out of Stubbville.”

😂🤣😂

[Clears his throat]

We watched that face and noise he made about 15 times in a row. Actual piss came out, we laughed so much.

May I see your rental agreement?

I threw it away.

Oh, boy.

Oh, boy, what?

You're fucked.

Why is she so damn great in everything?

I just rewatched Back to School and the scene with her taking notes while Mellon’s kid is losing his mind trying not to laugh is so great

Fantastic movie. A year or so ago I had a very similar experience renting a car…huge pain in the ass then when I finally got to the rental lot, there was no car in the designated spot. I was soooo super pissed off and this movie and Steve Martin popped into my head. Just like in the movie, I told myself I’d look back one day and laugh.

u/Corndogeveryday avatar

😂🤣😂 That is awesome! Sorry about the car though…that’s rough!

The whole trip was a comedy of errors. One example: At the rental car area, there were roughly 7 different lines for people who were renting cars. Nothing unusual…rental agent at a desk in front of a computer. Behind each rental agent/kiosk were huge car agency signs. For example behind agent 1/line 1 there was an Avis sign, behind agent 2 an Enterprise sign, agent 3 a Hertz rental sign, etc…all rental company options were accounted for. I rented through Alamo so I stood in the line where the rental agent had a large Alamo sign behind him. It sucked because it was the longest line! I was maybe 6th in line. A few lines had nobody in them. A few had 1 or 2 people. Oh well. After I finally got my turn and finished, the woman in back of me asked an attendant about the long wait. I overheard this as I was leaving, to get my car that ultimately wasn’t there. The attendant’s response set me off! He says, “oh it doesn’t matter which of these lines you stand in, they’re all the same. All attendants handle all of the various rental agencies. The placement of the signs behind us really have no meaning.” Well what the fuck?! You let me (and others) wait 20-25 minutes to be helped in your line while other lines were empty or had 1-2 people in them?! And nobody said anything?! I’m getting angry now typing this, lol. Then as I pass by the last agent desk on my way out of the terminal, I see that agent politely handing out free bottles of water to people in her line as they finished their paperwork. I wasn’t offered that. So if you’re ever in Grand Rapids MI at the airport car rental area, keep this in mind!

u/Corndogeveryday avatar

Wow…what an experience!

I was in Grand Rapids for business. An hour before I was going to leave my hotel to return the car and go the airport, I dropped my cell phone and broke it. No screen. And it had EVERYTHING on it for my trip from directions to emails, car & flight info, etc….lol…I almost had a heart attack.

I just rewatched this for the first time as an adult, I really appreciate the ending being all happy and sad at the same time. No twists or setup for a sequel, just walk out of the theatre content ending.

Steve Martin talks about John Candy and the ending of PTA in a recent documentary. Part of it is here. He gets emotional all these years later.

Now I’m crying…

John Candy is one of those people that you just KNOW they had so much more to present to the world.

His passing, was not only the great tragedy of a man losing his life at a relatively young age (43), but the universe being denied the future decades of performances that he was never able to do.

u/tkondaks avatar

Whenever I think of John Candy -- or for that matter any comedian or actor who died too young -- I can't help thinking of what Tyrell says to Roy Blatty in Blade Runner: "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long. And you have burned so very very brightly, Roy."

u/Corndogeveryday avatar

John Candy’s death was one of the few celebrity deaths that actually crushed me. No, I don’t know him personally, but he brought me so much joy and happiness through his work. John Candy was a huge part of my life growing up, and I was absolutely devastated when I heard he died. I was a sophomore in high school at the time.

The other death that really got me was Chris Farley. Again…a huge part of my young adulthood. I was a sophomore in college when he passed.

This is great. I just watered it last week, and it’s phenomenal. They were so good together.

u/bns013 avatar

I am not a fan of documentaries - however....I watched both episodes of that one on Apple TV recently. It motivated me to watch "Only Murders in the Building" and I respect the dynamic between Steve Martin and Martin Short even more.

No regrets. Steve Martin is clearly emotionally talented and we are lucky to have him in our lives.

u/TheObviousChild avatar

Oh wow. Thanks for sharing that. What a powerful clip.

This is a near perfect film, imo.

No flaws. Zaniness with literal guffaws and deep, meaningful moments that elicit a flood of tears.

The “going the wrong way” scene ALWAYS leaves me gasping for air from laughter.

And the ending song never fails to break me.
