From the noted Hollywood biographer and author of The Contender comes this celebration of the great American love story—the romance between Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart—capturing its complexity, contradictions, and challenges as never before.

InBogie & Bacall, William Mann offers a deep and comprehensive look at Lauren Bacall, Humphrey Bogart, and the unlikely love they shared. Mann details their early years—Bogart’s effete upbringing in New York City; Bacall’s rise as a model and actress. He paints a vivid portrait of their courtship and twelve-year marriage: the fights, the reconciliations, the children, the affairs, Bogie’s illness and Bacall’s steadfastness until his death. He offers a sympathetic yet clear-eyed portrait of Bacall’s life after Bogie, exploring her relationships with Frank Sinatra and Jason Robards, who would become her second husband, and the identity crisis she faced.

Surpassing previous biographies, Mann digs deep into the celebrities’ personal lives and considers their relationship from surprising angles. Bacall was just nineteen when she started dating the thrice-married forty-five-year-old Bogart. How might that age gap have influenced their relationship? In addition to what she gained, what might Bacall have lost by marrying a Hollywood superstar more than twice her age? How did Bogart, a man of average looks, become one of the greatest movie stars of all time? Throughout, Mann explains the unparalleled successes of their individual careers as well as the extraordinary love between them and the legend that has endured.

Filled with entertaining details and thoughtful insights based on newly available records and correspondence, and illustrated with 30-40 photographs, Bogie & Bacall offers a fresh look at this famous couple, their remarkable relationship, and their legacy.

This New Bio Inspired Me to Reread Another!

This New Bio Inspired Me to Reread Another!
Just finished one of the best Hollywood history books that I’ve read in a long time - Bogie & Bacall. William J Mann definitely has the storytelling talent of writing nonfiction that reads like a novel. I’ve read almost all of both his fiction and non-fiction books, and he’s one of my favorite Hollywood writers. One of his previous works, a biography of Katharine Hepburn - Kate: The Woman Who Was Hepburn - is one of my all-time favorites. In this book - his most recent - I learned so much about Hollywood history and the legacy of Bogie and Bacall. Lauren Bacall‘s first memoir By Myself, has always been one of my favorite - if not, THE favorite - Hollywood memoirs. I’ve read it three times, and now I’m starting it for the fourth time to supplement the bio I just read. I highly, highly recommend both of these books, but if you’re not familiar with either Humphrey Bogart or Lauren Bacall, please check out William J Mann’s biography. It’s fantastic!

An unbiased look at two legends—answers to many questions and a thorough history of their surprising backgrounds and inspirations—hard to put down.

This is the first biography that gives play to both Hollywood legends. It is an overall enjoyable read emphasizing the uncertainty that both Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall felt throughout their lives. It has a heavy concentration on their personal lives and a limited amount on their movie making careers. Having previously read a biography of Bogart published in the late 1990s I truly wanted to learn about Lauren Bacall and Mann's book doesn't disappoint. The only negatives are the limited examination of how they made most of their movies and his overreliance on Bacall's memoir as a source despite Mann's early acknowledgement that it (in its various renditions) is flawed.

I'd already purchased Mann's biography of Kate Hepburn and after reading this book I'm looking forward to starting that one too.

This is definitely a book for anyone interested in Hollywood's Golden Age!

In this well-researched, extremely well-written biography, author Mann gives a clear-eyed view of the much mythologized Bogart and Bacall. Yet despite his demolishing of the mythology and the revelations of their all too human flaws (and the psychological damage that created them) his compassion renders them as more complete human beings, and all the more relatable because of it. As in his brilliant Marlon Brando book, The Contender, Mann brings new insights into the lives of film legends that readers of film biographies thought they knew by heart, but may have to reconsider in light of his intelligent analysis. Excellent.

I really enjoy reading biographies and looked forward to this one. I learned quite a bit about both Bogie and Bacall, which is what I wanted. However, this book is filled with waaaay to much detail that has nothing whatsoever to do with the story. It is filled with minute details of every play, movie and televised event. I feel kind of bad for giving it this review but when I can't wait for a book to end, and find myself skimming pages and skipping entire paragraphs, well.....

As a long time admirer of Bogie & Bacall, I really enjoyed this book. I have reread Bacall’s By Myself a few times, so I appreciated Mann’s nuanced take on the memoir and got more insight into their relationship. Bogart’s earlier life and Bacall’s later life were also very well documented. Highly recommended for Bogie and Bacall fans.

Just received the book today. I read a few pages to get a feel for the book. I read some information about Bogey's 3rd wife, Mayo Methot that I did not know. (She and Bogey were really in love when they first married.) Lauren Bacall was hesitant to act and sing in a Broadway musical. However, she won a Tony for Applause and a Tony for Woman of the Year. Both shows were not well reviewed but Lauren Bacall was praised for her work. I read 4 pages about Bacall's marriage to Jason Robards Jr. Bacall found it very difficult to be married to an actor who spent most of his time drunk and on the town with friends. William Mann's writing is excellent. I look forward to finishing this book about 2 of my favorite movie stars. Highly recommended.
