Luggage forwarding reliability

I’ve been reading about Japan’s luggage forwarding service (“takuhaibin” if I got that right) but am concerned it’s too good to be true. All else equal, most air passengers prefer to carry on rather than check bags, largely because the hassles of toting bags through security and terminals and on and off planes beat the risks and downsides of bags going missing or being delayed. Is takuhaibin reliability qualitatively better than that or airline bag check?

Don't know the statistics, but I found a single report of a missing piece of luggage: https://www.reddit.com/r/JapanTravel/comments/zr6753/advice_for_missing_luggage_by_yamato_taqbin/

Short story: The handle to which the waybill was attached had come off. Within 24 hours, the Yamato folks found a suitcase that looked right, sent a photo for confirmation, and everything worked out.

When I used it, I packed a copy of my itinerary (with hotel dates and contact info) on top, just in case. And my very rugged luggage tag includes my email address.

We live in Japan and have often used it over many years to send luggage as well as other stuff. Never had a problem. Here's an older thread on this forum with other reporting the same.

If you check bags at an airport there is zerot hassle of toting bags through security and terminals because you have the bags checked in at theonset. IMHO the main reason people dont' check bags is they are too cheap to pay for a ticket with baggage included.

Having said that luggage forwarding is far more reliable than any air port luggage system.

Have used Ta-Q-Bin in Japan for years - have never had any issues - extremely reliable. We always have an iTag tracking device in each piece of luggage too - interesting to see the logistics/movement of our luggage across the country.

Note: 1/. On departure from Japan any luggage sent to airport with Ta-Q-Bin must be sent 48hours (minimum) in advance. 2/. On arrival in Japan I’ve found same day delivery service to arrival city hotels (ie Tokyo) is not always available - even if arriving at dawn.

Japanese residents use Takkyubin very often, some daily. If they ever lose something, it makes the national news. Here we’re talking about thousands of items being shipped every day. I haven't seen any news of a list item for decades.

Takkyunib is just a part of regular daily life in Japan. It's almost 100% reliable. Can't say the same about airline luggage handling.

Until you see service workers in action in Japan, it's hard to believe how careful they are about their work! I've been on this Forum for years and have yet to see a complaint about the luggage forwarding services in Japan. If you don't use luggage forwarding services, try to travel light and pre-plan your laundry nights so you'll be staying in a hotel with coin-operated laundry machines.

Yamato started delivery service in 1976 and annual deliveries reached 10 million in 1979. They delivered 1.5 billions in 2014. We've been using it (Sagawa and Nittsu also when they had the service) since 1980's.

I don’t use baggage delivery often because I’m a cheapskate, but I’ve got friends who do and tell me that they’ve never had an issue. There is also compensation in the case that your bag is lost or broken.

Thanks, all. We’ve got an involved rail transfer planned from outside Nagano to Kyoto with a daytime stop or two in between, so we’ll likely use it. Just wanted to be sure on our bags making it contemporaneously.
