Vaughn Wilton Monroe (October 7, 1911 - May 21, 1973) was an American baritone singer, trumpeter and big band leader and actor, most popular in the 1940s and 1950s. He has stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for recording and radio.
Essential Gold contains only those performances in which Vaughn Monroe participated as a singer. While his band provided accompanment his singing, this set ignores performances in which his band accompanied other singers or performed instrumentals. For a more complete picture of Vaughn Monroe, you'll probably want the two CD set, "
Racing With The Moon: An Anthology 1940-56
."
The audio quality, considering the age of the sources, is extremely good. There is essentially no background sound or static. This quality was apparently maintained by not including anything for which the source was too bad to get a clean track. Frankly, I'd rather have a more complete album of his singing performances, even if that meant including some tracks that couldn't be brought up to the high standards that were apparently used for this album.
The following is a directory of which songs are on which of three albums. The stuff in brackets indicate the album(s) that each song appears on. "Gold" means the song is on "Essential Gold", "Moon" indicates "

NOT THE "LET IT SNOW" I WAS LOOKING FOR.
Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2021Verified Purchase
I bought this C.D./Compilation Album specifically for Vaughn Monroes' most famous song/hit: The Christmas and Wintertime Song "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow". You know the one that gets played at the end of the movie "Die Hard" during the closing credits. That version is not on this Album/C.D. Collection. Instead it is a different/alternate recording that Monroe did with a group of back-up singers called "The Norton Sisters". It sounds totally different and is not nearly as good as the original version A.K.A. the one from "Die Hard". This is especially frustrating for me because I know of this "Norton Sisters" Version and was specifically trying to avoid it. Some other Vaughn Monroe Compilation Albums (there are many to choose from, particularly here on Amazon) identify that version of the song in the track listing; either in the Amazon Description, the Album/C.D. Liner itself, or both. It will read something like "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow [Norton Sisters]". So I avoided purchasing Vaughn Monroe C.D.s with that version listed. I made the reasonable assumption that if that version is not listed, I.E. the words NORTON SISTERS do not appear after the words "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow" then it must be the original/iconic/"Die Hard" version of the song. Well on this compilation album/C.D. collection that is not the case. It is the Norton Sisters version of the song and not the original/iconic/"Die Hard version. And the item simply does not specify that. Hence I was extremely disappointed in this "Vaughn Monroe Essential Gold" C.D. Collection. I guess the other song recordings on it are OK.

Why Vaughn Monroe was so popular.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 27, 2018Verified Purchase
This is for lovers of pop songs from the forties, a smooth vocal backed by a polished band. Vaughn Monroe could lay claim to have the best voice of any crooner of that time. He varies his mood very well, being well capable of interpreting a lyric. Among the 62 numbers here there will always be a few 'not quite good enough' but the writers of theses songs knew how to wow the public, as witness Monroe's terrific success. A few surprises include an upbeat 'Shall We Dance' from 'The King and I' together with 'Red Sails in the Sunset' and 'When the Lights Go On Again' both of which I'd wrongly associated with only British singers.
The transfers are acceptable though Vaughn's voice could be better defined.
However if you want a selection of enjoysble songs, some corny, from the forties, this is for you.

I scored major "good son" points with this purchase.

My mom grew up in WWII; she and her family, especially her older sibs, always listened to music. They all loved that golden voice of Vaughn Monroe. When I purchased this CD for my mom, she was amazed at how many songs were on the CDs. In our regular phone calls, she tells me how much she enjoys the music and what a thoughtful son I am. For the record, I got the CD because I know it would please her. Still, it's always a delight to receive loving compliments from my mom (-:

Vaughn Monroe Essential Collection
Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2012Verified Purchase
I admit to being prejudice. My sister and I would listen to Vaughn Monroe on the radio while doing the supper dishes. Vaughn Monroe has a very distinctive voice with a good baritone range, and he had a fine dance band orchestra. Many of the songs on the CDs are ones I can try to sing along with, because I remember the words and music as Vaughn Monroe sang them. I didn't remember that "Red Roses for a Blue Lady" was a Vaughn Monroe song. My favorites of course are "Ghost Riders in the Sky", "Dance Ballerina Dance", and "Racing with the Moon". I am quite pleased with the CDs, and they are often in my car stereo.
