A “glitch” in a phone system created a false report of an armed individual, prompting the evacuation of Roslyn Elementary School in Westmount on Wednesday.
The incident began around 11:30 a.m. when a Code Silver was announced on the intercom, said a parent who was texting with their child, who was in the school on Westmount Ave. The school then went into lockdown.

“We took the message seriously and followed our school’s protocol for a Code Silver,” the Roslyn administration said Wednesday in an email to parents. “We had to take action to ensure everyone’s safety.”
Police officers could be seen with weapons drawn entering the building. After the evacuation, they searched the school room by room. Police said there were no arrests or injuries.

Witnesses said they saw officers escort a person out of the building. The person was handcuffed and put into a police cruiser. He was identified as school concierge Angelo Martello, who was released when police verified who he was.
“They do give you a sense of security if it ever happens again,” Martello said.
English Montreal School Board spokesperson Mike Cohen said the issue was a false alarm related to the school’s phone system and that the school was evacuated as a precaution.
“When you get a call like that, they have to follow protocol and they have to do their due diligence, even though we know it was a glitch in the system that caused this,” he said.
Students were initially brought to Victoria Hall and Marianopolis College.
Shortly after 2 p.m., the administration said all students would be taken to Victoria Hall, at 4626 Sherbrooke St. W., where parents could pick them up.
One parent told the Gazette earlier in the day that her child was texting her from a classroom as they were being told to evacuate. The mother immediately ran down to the school and found the area was blocked off.
