Publisher's summary

In the best-selling tradition of Smashed and The Glass Castle, this raw, eye-opening memoir tells the powerful story of Elizabeth Garrison's fractured childhood, descent into teenage drug addiction, and struggle to overcome nearly insurmountable odds.

Elizabeth invites the listener behind the closed doors of a picture-perfect Christian family to reveal a dark, hidden world of child abuse, domestic violence, and chilling family secrets all performed in the name of God under the tyrannical rule of her father.

Like countless teenage girls, Elizabeth turns to drugs and alcohol to escape. With smack-you-in-the-face honesty, Elizabeth chronicles the dark realities and real-life horrors of teenage drug abuse, living on the streets, foster homes, and treatment centers. She paints an unsparing portrait of scratching and clawing her way out of the grips of child abuse, addiction, and betrayal to find the strength within herself to save her own life.

Contains mature themes.

A Reader's Comments

As a survivor of child abuse I found this memoir to help me to overcome my own demons. I highly recommend this memoir to those that have experienced child abuse.

Easy listen

This book held my attention. the narrator was good and didn't distract from the story. It's an interesting story of a girl's tragic childhood.

A Great Story Of Recovery

Drugs and alcohol are so often masking things of a deeper nature. This is an honest, eye opening memoir of the struggles to overcome severe drug and alcohol abuse stemming from the undercurrent of her upbringing. The narrator was pleasant and good, despite an unique rythym/cadence to her speaking. I had a very hard time taking breaks from this book to accomplish real life. 😁

Very stirring

Absolutely LOVED! Really makes you think about what goes on behind closed doors and how and why people make some of the choices they do. Beautifully told. I was able to feel Elizabeth's pain.

Wasn’t what I expected

I wasn’t impressed with this book. It never clarified who the monster was, so I feel like I was left hanging.

Heartbreaking, but a great read!

I really enjoyed listening to this book. I have worked with kids in a juvenile detention center now for over 25 years, and she told the story so well. This truly helps people understand where these kids come from! Thank you so much for writing the book, and I wish you all the luck in the world. God’s blessings.

Didn't enjoy

I really struggled to finish this one. Everytime the narrator did the whiney voice. It was mainly just about her being high and not having a reason for it until she got much older. When she found out about her sister she didn't help. She was very unrepeatable.
