Jenny Scheinman has played violin on a few Bill Frisell albums, so you may recognize her sound and a similar sensibility here. She always plays with an appealing tone, and she is shooting for a very clever, eclectic, chamber-jazz kind of vibe. Her arrangements are always nice. However, there's often something a little too "cute" about all of this, like it is craftmanship but not art.
Tracks that I did like:
"The Lucky Hum" - A bluesy vocalise unfolds over an ethereal texture of harmonics, plucked piano strings and such.
"Nigun" - Plaintive melody over sustained accordion tones. leads into...
"Zeneybim" - A majestic, quasi-march groove with the same sustained accordion. The melody is half-klezmer, half-hoedown.
Plus, the opener, "Into the Clearing"
Worst track is "Wiseacre," which sounds like a circus backup band doing a parody of klezmer.
