Hayley Atwell breaks her silence on her appearance as Captain Carter in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Atwell first joined the MCU in the Captain America's debut film, Captain America: The First Avenger. However, she reappeared periodically throughout the massive shared universe as her character in main films and multiple television series, including her solo outing in Agent Carter for the ABC network. However, her most anticipated appearance came in the form of the variant Captain Carter in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Atwell first played Captain Carter in a voice role for the animated MCU anthology television series, What If...? The show explored varying alternate timelines within the multiverse if key moments in the main canon occurred differently. Captain Carter was the star of the first episode of the series where the character was given the super soldier serum after a near fatal injury to Steve Rogers. She returned for the final episode of the series as well as a major cameo in the Doctor Strange sequel for her live-action debut as a member of Earth-838's superhero team called the Illuminati.

In a recent interview at Awesome Con 2022 (via Fandom Spotlite), Atwell discussed her appearance as Captain Carter in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. When asked if she ever imagined her relatively small role in the initial Captain America film would ever lead to her featuring as a superhero in a major MCU movie, the actor responded that she initially thought of her role as another day at the office but now appears proud of the accomplishment. Read what Atwell said below.

"I imagine my younger self hearing that and fainting. There was no expectation because, of course, this was before a time when Marvel is what it is now. And Captain America: The First Avenger started to build up this new phase of Marvel, so there was always a risk. Every time as an actor you do a job. There are so many other factors involved, you never know how it's going to be received. So when we filmed it, it was for me, I was like, 'Okay. I'm just going to work.' And I loved the experience but then beyond that, the films belong to you. You decide what they mean to you."

"We set out to do something that would delight the audience and here you are years later still being part of the experience. It's very much down to your support of it. So I thank you for that."

Atwell appears grateful for the experience and thanked the audience for making her dreams come true. The actor acknowledged that her ability to play Captain Carter in both What If...? and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness came as a result of the passionate support from the MCU's legion of fans. She explained that it was the consistently positive and devoted fan-base that encouraged Marvel to bring her back throughout the years and give her a memorable role in one of the biggest films of 2022.

Captain Carter's appearance in the Doctor Strange sequel was a welcomed surprise to many as she was one of the stand-out characters from Marvel's What If...? television series. Following her cameo, rumors have spread of a desire within Marvel to expand her character and give Atwell a second television show based on the character of Peggy Carter. Following the character's gruesome death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it is unlikely that the film's version of the character will return to the MCU anytime soon. However, due to the mulitversal nature of the MCU, there is a possibility for a revival of Captain Carter.
