George Watson's College in Colinton Road, Scotland, is facing backlash for reporting a student's parents to social services after they refused to accept their 13-year-old child transitioning with the help from the school staff. According to a report by The Telegraph, they parents had fought the teacher's attempt to 'affirm' their daughter's transgender identity.
The school had received a gold standard award from the controversial trans activist charity LGBT Youth Scotland (LGBTYS). Per reports, the parents had consulted psychologists who advised them to adopt a "watchful waiting" approach regarding their teenage daughter's sexual orientation. However, the school allegedly flouted that instruction and affirmed the student's gender identity.
Geroge Watson College said that the school staff acted “respecting the child’s wishes to use the masculine pronouns”, adding that they had the teenager’s “best interest and wellbeing at heart.”
Watchful waiting, also known as watch and wait or WAW, is an approach to a medical problem where time is allowed to pass before medical intervention or therapy is used. During this time, repeated testing may be performed.
The student's mother, speaking to The Telegraph, accused the school of lying to them, and alleged that they treated her child like an experimental guinea pig.
“We were repeatedly lied to by the school,” she said. “I feel that our child was just seen as a little guinea pig by the school and LGBT Youth Scotland.
“The school policies, which LGBT Youth Scotland help write, are set up to ensure parents are deliberately misled. We had received two expert opinions, including from a specialist in gender, not to challenge our child but that adults should basically turn a blind eye, and not affirm her.
“But these experts were repeatedly dismissed by teachers. They literally said to us on one occasion that LGBT Youth Scotland were the experts in this.”
