What travelers are saying
- loopy101Ipswich, UK346 contributionsBurghley really has the wow factor. The setting and rooms are incredible. It screams loads of money and the various family members being not sure what to focus funds on. So they spent it on fabulous paintings, tapestries, furniture, carvings, murals, drapes, china, and other artifacts and kind of cobbled it all together in one massive smorgasbord of filthy richness. It really is quite overwhelming. But in a good way. I really wouldn't want to live here, as you'd get a headache, but it's great to visit to see it all briefly.Written May 20, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - EmmaklincsGrantham, UK53 contributionsWe went to the Adventure play, sculpture gardens & garden of surprise, A really well thought out & fun place to visit. Our Grandsons had a great time exploring & finding hidden features. They loved finding the hidden moles & marking them off in the booklet, going under tunnels & walking along rope bridges. The garden of surprise was interactive & really held their interest. Fascinating sculptures led to many concealed areas that they loved exploring. We ate a lovely meal in the orangery before heading home. Definitely plan to return as we didn’t see it all. A great family day out.Written April 10, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- NeteLizLeicestershire, UK40 contributionsPreview Night, first of Season 2023, June 6th, “Measure for Measure”, Shakespeare play.
This production set at turn of 20th century, Vienna.
Authentic design costumes. Live orchestral music by musicians set at rear of the stage. Some familiar music, other specifically composed for this performance.
The acting and actors all brilliant.
Shakespeare’s writing as ever totally relevant to now, 2023.
Thought provoking, irony, humour.
Fun to visit Tolethorpe Hall, take your own picnic, beautiful garden areas.
Easy organised car parking.
We have been going for years, includes Shakespeare and other brilliant writers, from Dad’s Army, to Wind in the Willows, this year includes Lady In The Van. Youth Yheatre workshops and productions.
We often attend at least three performances per season.
Go see and visit, state of the art theatre, all weather productions, read all about it on their own website.

Stamford is a wonderful town to visit and have a good look around anyway and the show at the end of the day was the ending to a fine day. The venue was comfortable and the theatre was excellent. The bar was adequate and there was plenty of space to mingle. Which was a good thing as I was nursing a broken arm and our daughter came along to see the show.Written March 20, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - NeteLizLeicestershire, UK40 contributionsStamford Arts Centre for many years administrated the selling of Tickets fi4 the Stamford Shakespeare Company. Always helpful, always efficient.
The SSC founded years ago, first performances held in the Courtyard of the renowned George Hotel in Stamford.
They’re home now, Tolethorpe Hall, approx 5 miles north of Stamford, just off the A1 travelling south.
We attended the “As You Like It” production last night, Preview performance, 13.6.23.
Absolutely brilliant!
Set in “The Summer of Love”, the Forest of Arden, costumes and clothing, 1960’s, live talented musicians, Shakespeare’s writings put to the melodys of the 60’s, very clever, witty, the humour and irony, the farce of Shakespeare, fitting into the times of teen rebellion, severe Fathers, eccentricity, and befitting the hippy flower power of the 1960’s.
The music, the costumes, stunning, the research, and the hard work of the set craftsmanship, to all observers, impressive.
The acting….” All the worlds a stage”…….the actor absolutely brilliant and skillful.
All the actors, the wrestling scene, the final Bridal Scene and Epilogue, everything just so brilliant.
Go….see and watch for yourselves!

Poor service, no leadership / waited ages for our drinks to arrive and very small portions for the price being charged. We had a significant complaint (which I’ve reported to them & won’t go into detail here) and despite that, we were presented with a bill with a 12.5% service charge added!!….which we naturally declined.
We thoroughly recommend Tolethorpe, it’s fantastic…we go every year, but next year we’ll revert to taking our own food.Written August 14, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The church is pretty inside, but the main draw for us was the live web cam feed of the pedigrine falcons in their nest on the roof. We saw them being fed by the parents. Well worth a visit to see both the church and the birdsWritten June 8, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - macedonboyGlasgow, UK185,073 contributionsA former hospital, but now private residences. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to visit on an open day, although I was permitted to walk into the building. It’s a lovely Neo-Gothic building and it would be lovely to live in the building with its old school charm and atmospheric feel.Written August 25, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Genghis U11 contributionsI gave it 4 as the buildings on one of the slopes are undergoing renovations. When the work has finished it deserves a 5. A nice peaceful break along a very lovely old street full of nice architecture. My youngest is in a wheelchair and loved the cobbled road at the top.Written August 4, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
