I want to buy souvenirs to take home with my friends. My Thai friend recommended me to come here. I really liked it. There were all beautiful colorful silks. It is very meticulous and detailed. I've bought a lot.

If you are interested learning about the history and culture of Surin and NE Thailand (Isaan) at a small but modern museum, this will meet your expectations. Unfortunately the Thais don’t seem to be interested. I was the only one visiting on a Friday afternoon. The museum isn’t downtown but in a new city development. Polite, accommodating staff, ( I spent an hour here which is my limit for museums)

When I read it was a pillar, I thought it was just column, but you can actually go inside and pray. It is an interesting mix of modern and Khmer architecture symbols. It is possible to park nearby and spend some time inside. Worth a stop!

Don't go expecting wild nature and interesting hikes. Instead, the park is basically a selection of Buddha statues on small hills around the main temple. They're interesting statues and there are some remarkable sights, but it's perhaps not a place I'd travel from overseas to visit. However, after months living in Bangkok, the fresh air and change of scenery is very welcome so, in that regard, it's worth the visit.

Not amazing but has most of what you need (groceries, banks, eateries) plus the department store. We were looking for a barber, but that they don’t have!

The Elephant Round-up in Surin, 450 kilometer northeast of Bangkok, is a yearly event. it is normally held the second weekend of November. More than 200 elephants participate in the event. On the Friday morning before the Round-up there is the largest elephant breakfast in the world. Hundreds of market stalls are filled with fruit and sugar cane. The elephant parade start at the train station at 09:00 am. Elephants walk towards the breakfast accompanied by floats. The actual Round-up is on the Saturday and Sunday at a special venue behind the stadium. Historic wars are re-enacted with hundreds of actors.

Don't expect the Great Lakes, but enjoy a change from the city with the chance of lovely sunsets. Watch the fishermen cast their nets, and try the restaurants overlooking the lake. Follow the road past farmers and their buffaloes, with egrets keen to perch in the time-honoured style. Hear the splash as Nile Perch flash in the sunlit fish ponds. See the local children play in the water as their parents enjoy a picnic.

NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH PRASAT MUEANG TAM ! PRASAT TA MUEAN THOM IS LOCATED IN SURIN!
As already observed in an earlier review, some pictures shown for this "attraction" are completely wrong.
Prasat Meuang Tam (or Thi) is located in the Buriram province and is mostly visited in conjunction with Phanom Rung. One ticket covers both entrances.

Prasat Ta Muean Thom however is one of three Khmer temple sites which can be found along road 2407, in the south of Surin Province, bordering Cambodia.
Whereas the first two sites you encounter - Ta Muean and Ta Muean Tot - are no big deal, i was quite impressed by the 3rd, the Ta Muean Thom. When approaching, you need to leave an ID with a Thai military checkpoint, and another ID of some sort is required at the actual entrance of the site. If you're a fan of Khmer temples (like me and my wife) I can definitely recommend a visit ! No entrance fee at the time of our visit. The site is guarded by a mix of Thai and Cambodian soldiers, who happily provide some information and pose for pictures. More details about the temple itself can a.o. be found on Wikipedia.

The highlight of this temple is its building imitating the Khmer style with a red prang. It was built recently. The wihaan in front of it is quite small and very simple. We have not found any historical information about this temple not present in guides books even the ones provided by Surin TAT Office. I must say that like all temples Surin, Wat Sala Loy is a quite common temple despite its modern Khmer prang and the small group of golden Buddha statues at its right.

Ban Buthom Basketry Village is about 25 km from Surin on the highway to Sisaket. Unless you are travelling to Sisaket or somewhere else in this general direction, Ban Buthom Basketry Village is not worth the time or trouble of a visit.

The so-called "Village" comprises two roadside shops selling overpriced basketry - you can find cheaper at almost any local market in Thailand.

You would think that an enterprize trying to attract tourists would at least make a token effort to demonstrate how the baskets are woven, but there is nothing to show you how they are made.

    Give it a miss!

If your are visiting Surin and you have not experienced a visit to a Buddhist temple before, Wat Nongbua is right in the center of town and within easy walking distance of most central city locations.

Do not be confused when you get to the entrance. The large marble plaque at the entrance spells out its name in Thai and in English as Nongbour Temple, not Nongbua. But spelling variations are very common when Thai is translated into English.

The original temple was built in 1862, but there have obviously been many more modern and tasteless additions.

If you are in Surin, Wat Thepsurin is worth a visit for its beautiful artwork and architecture. The ceiling is decorated with carvings of royal decorations and many famous and important Buddha images are enshrined here. There is also a royal crematorium which King Rama V ordered built as a crematorium for members of the royal family who had no special crematory pavilion on the grounds of Sanam Luang in Bangkok.
