Anyone have *bad* experiences with Hitch?

B/CS Life

Howdy. I'll be in Austin later this week, but I have a flight out of Houston in the afternoon on Saturday. I originally planned on renting a car, but F1 completely screwed that plan. A coworker suggested Hitch, so I booked the first ride out of Austin Saturday morning.

How reliable are they? Should I work on some contingency plan in case? I have a pretty tight schedule once I get to Houston till my flight time.

Thank you!

I've used hitch about twice now to go to Austin. Both went well, I'm pretty sure you have nothing to worry about.

Awesome. Thanks for the info!

Hey, i wondered what the sort of costs were like. I want to go from dallas to houston - cant get the app til i arrive in states, so no way to check - even a really rough wild outside estimate would help

Hah. Oh wow it's been over a year since I used it, and I only used it that one time.

It was stupidly cheap, like $25 or something. The driver said it was an intro rate and normally it would start scaling up to like $50. So I'm guessing an intro rate will probably be $50 from Dallas to Houston.

All in all, very worth it, even at the non-intro rate. They make their money as a courier, so passengers are basically just there as extra cargo.

That being said, if you're going from Dallas to Houston, you should consider flying. That drive is long and boring. If you do do it, though, tell the driver you want to stop at at least one Buc-ee's. There's two along the way. Enjoy the bathrooms, get some Beaver Chips, Beaver Nuggets, jerky, and grab a t-shirt.

HA!! defo will try the 'buc -ees'

Well im actually trying to get from Dallas to New orleans, lol, so even further! I was thinking of flying but with my suitcase the price goes up to being alot. I was trying to do it super budget and fit more than I can afford to in.

Thanks for answering, it really helps! I'll prob just book a greyhound or something I think as I can do that and get all way to nOLA for around $85

Vonlane is a great option.

Used them a few times between Austin and San Antone. No complaints at all. Just like an Uber but between cities for a significant fraction of the cost.

Great! Thanks!

I drive for Hitch so perhaps a different perspective. They are reliable in Austin/Houston cause there’s an abundance of drivers. Rides leaving from college station have (occasional) issues finding a driver. For example, one time Hitch contacted me and offered to pay me a large bonus for a trip to Houston from Cstat, apparently the original driver had cancelled and they’d been searching for a new driver for hours. Another time I got a flat tire and had to cancel only 10 minutes before I was scheduled to pick someone up, they couldn’t find a replacement for hours on that either. Their network just isn’t large enough yet that these issues don’t come up. However they do everything in their power to find another driver if something unforeseen happens (offer the drivers more money)

The biggest source of my concern was taking the first available ride in the early AM out of Austin. However, it seems like that's the most reliable route. Thanks for the info.

I just recently signed up as a driver and there have been no opportunities worth taking... $54 for round trip San Antonio - Austin, $112 round trip San Antonio - College Station... absolute garbage. I'm realizing this is only really good for if you were going somewhere to begin with.

As a part-time driver, this company does not show any concern for its drivers, guys. The app has caused app issues, lost rides were accepted, bringing more luggage then can't fit, and I am not receiving support from Hitch. Ridesharing is like forgetting their support network, which was instrumental in their growth. The purpose of this review is to share both the positive and negative aspects. Although you can generate extra income, it doesn't add up if you take into account the lost fuel and time. I am curious as to why the company does not remember what Covid-19 did to everyone. It's been a struggle to provide for your family lately, regardless of your current activity. Uber, Eats, and Lyft profit from drivers but do not provide any support for them.
