Soo man pleads to assaulting woman who later died in car crash

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— A Sault Ste. Marie man has been sentenced for assaulting a childhood friend.

The Chippewa County Prosecutor’s Office says Seth Horton, 23, pleaded guilty to 3rd degree criminal sexual conduct, bribing, intimidating, or interfering with a witness, and using a computer to a commit a crime. He was accused of assaulting Katie Robinson in 2019, then publicly denying it.

COVID delayed the trial several times. While it was pending, Robinson was killed in a traffic crash in 2021. When the prosecution wanted to introduce a recording of her earlier testimony, the defense filed motions to prevent it. The case was referred to the Court of Appeals, which denied both, and the Michigan Supreme Court upheld that decision.

Horton ultimately pleaded guilty to all counts against him. He was sentenced to two years in the Chippewa County Correctional Facility and three years’ probation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
