This place has a great atmosphere right by the University of New Mexico. You order at the counter and they call your number. They have fantastic green chile cheeseburgers and great french fries and onion rings!

My husband used to eat breakfast here every day when he attended UNM in the '70s. Whenever we make it back to Albuquerque, we make a point of eating breakfast here. The bacon and eggs are average, but the cinnamon rolls are excellent; the recipe has not changed a bit in the last 35 years. They are very buttery, (not like the cream-cheesy Cinnabon). They charge for refills on all drinks (including coffee), but I assume it's to keep the college kids from parking at their tables to study. Food is served cafeteria style, and there is nothing fancy about this restaurant. It's always busy, which speaks for the quality of the food, since there are numerous other restaurants within a few blocks and none are as packed as Frontier.

This is where you go to eat when youre in college and live on a diet of soda, chips and video games. Everything about this place is average, except the seating capacity which must be around 1000. The reason this place continually wins readers polls in local magazines is due to the sheer volume of people that eat there. if you never do, you wont be missing anything.

Keep in mind, this is a old, genuine diner / cafeteria style restaurant. Don't go here if you uptight about your dining experience. I usually don't order much here except the excellent breakfast burrito. Make sure to ladle a generous amount of their green chile stew / sauce over it before you eat!!! Get a container to go and grab some fresh tortillas while your at it.

Located directly across Central from the University of New Mexico sits the Frontier Restaurant. Our family has been going there for years and it's always a hit with our out of town guests. We anticipated a wait since it was the first weekend of Balloon Fiesta but were pleasantly surprised when we encountered a very short line to order. At the Frontier, you order from one of the many registers and then find a table while you wait for your order to be cooked. Make sure you grab a menu to help you decide if there's a line because they are very prompt in taking your order once a spot opens up. They hustle a LOT of food through their building and are very efficient but still helpful. Watch for your ticket number to appear a few minutes later and grab your hot off the grill tray of food. We ordered a variety of items: eggs with bacon and tortillas; a breakfast burrito; freshly squeezed orange juice; carne adovada with eggs and well, you can't go to Frontier without getting a cinnamon roll or two. Coffee is included with most of the breakfasts and is pretty good although you do have to pay a nominal amount for any refills. Everything was quickly prepared with generous but not oversized portions. The green chile used by Frontier is some of the best in town; in the burrito and SW style hashbrowns it's just chopped chile with the little dark flecks from flame roasting. Not too hot, not too mild... it's just right (with a little kick). If you need more green chile, they have large pots of complimentary sauce available for self service. The carne adovada was fork tender chunks of tasty pork that were enveloped in medium hot red chile sauce. The hash browns served with the eggs are outstanding as well with both crispy bits and tender potato shreds. Make sure you use the freshly made tortillas to get all the sauce! The cinnamon roll comes surrounded by melted butter/margarine and surely increased my risk of a heart attack but they are very tasty as is the orange juice that's squeezed on-site. The tortillas come right of the grill and onto your plate; there's nothing quite like freshly made tortillas and these are wonderful! The decor and seating are nothing special; the best attribute may be the "people watching" both along Central and in the restaurant. You see everything from college students recovering from festivities the night before to families who just left church services to business people. And they're all welcome at the Frontier Restaurant.

The Frontier is one of the icons of ABQ. Good food at very reasonable prices. Across from UNM on old 66, with lots of ambiance. Popular with students, concert and theater goers and locals. good mexican cuisine and great cinnamon rolls. Great collection of art on the walls accumulated by owners at various functions for local charities.

We went twice while staying in Albuquerque for a week. I like the atmosphere. Looked like a favorite among locals and tourists. Sweet rolls were great. A lot of variety on menu.

The only reason to eat at The Frontier is if you want a cheap meal at 3:00 AM.....or you only have 45 minutes between classes at UNM. The food is mediocre fast food (okay, you can get green chili on your burger) & the atmosphere is loud, especially in the front dining area at peak meal times. But, it is CHEAP. I would only bring an out-of-towner/tourist if nothing else was open, or they have heard of it and insisted......after all, it was a favorite of Tony Hillerman. There are much better placces to sample New Mexican cuisine.

This was always the meeting place for university students. Quick, cheap, mostly self-service, very convenient, and solid, enjoyable food. A great place for lunch, dinner, or just hanging out with friends.

We just arrived in Albq and decided to eat at the Frontier based on a recommendation from my niece and family who lived here while stationed in the military. It is kinda quirky....but we are even thinking of going back for breakfast tomorrow! My husband hand the ground chuck steak, fries and a very large salad (complimentary). I had the taco salad ($5). I was so pleased when it came on a plate withOUT that greasy taco shell. Instead it had a side of taco chips. We were tempted by the amazing looking giant cinnamon rolls...but held off. My only complaint is that you have to pay to refill your drinks (refill of ice tea - 53 cents). But it looks like a great place for the college group....you can get a bean and cheese burrito for 1.79 and they serve the beans and cheese on a plate and you get 2 tortillas to make your own. Open 5 am - 1 am.

Be sure and stop in at the Frontier. It has great food and super cheap...It is across the street from U of NM and has been in this location since Kennedy was President. This place is huge- order at the counter - then pick up your silverware and find a table in the cavernous dining areas (lots of mini dining rooms- the place just keeps going on and on) ...They print your number on your receipt and you watch the electronic display board when your order is ready for you to pick up...They have the best Huevos Rancheros breakfast (less than $5) in the State of NM
