Illinois is hosting Oklahoma transfer defensive back Jaden Davis for an official visit this weekend, and the Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) native was in attendance for Friday's open spring practice. The fifth-year senior has one season of eligibility remaining.

  • A former four-star prospect in the Class of 2019 out of Florida prep powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas (No. 225 prospect in the Composite), Davis (5-foot-10, 185 pounds) during four seasons at Oklahoma started 13 of 37 games at cornerback and totaled 101 tackles, 10 passes defended and one interception.
  • Last season, Davis started nine of 10 games for the Sooners and totaled 35 tackles, two passes defended and one tackle for loss. He had a 62.3 overall season grade, according to Pro Football Focus. According to PFF, Davis allowed 16 receptions for 202 yards on 30 targets.

How he’d fit: Davis would give the Illinois secondary a big boost of high-level experience. Illinois is replacing four starters and three likely top-100 NFL Draft picks from the secondary (Devon Witherspoon, Quan Martin and Sydney Brown), so both the playing time and development opportunity likely stand out for Davis. Tahveon Nicholson (cornerback), Matthew Bailey (safety) and Xavier Scott (nickel or cornerback) look solidified with starting spots for the Illini, and Illinois added fifth-year transfer safety Nicario Harper and JUCO transfer cornerback Kaleb Patterson. But the Illini still see a need to improve depth and competition for a starting spot. Davis likely would challenge Tyler Strain for the starting spot at cornerback, though he also could be a nickel option. The Illini like their long-term future in the secondary, but Davis could provide a one-year bridge to the talented prep prospects they're bringing in and force some of the returning veterans to play even better to earn significant roles. The Illini, who had the No. 1 scoring defense in the FBS last fall, don’t plan on taking a huge step back on defense this season, and Davis could give them more assurance that won’t happen.

247Sports’ prep scouting report of Davis: “Shorter cornerback with a lean frame. On the small side, lacking some natural size. Tests as a solid athlete, with a sub 4.6-second 40-yard dash. Plays for one of the top high school programs in South Florida and the country. Plays nickel for St. Thomas Aquinas and likely projects there at the next level. Quick and instinctive. Has natural cover skills with the ability to read and react to a receiver’s route. Quick off the edge as a blitzer and shows willingness and physicality as a run defender and tackler. Has some positional versatility as he can play safety in addition to corner. Strong player who will need to overcome his size limitations as he sees an increase in competition. Projects as a likely Power 5 contributor and starter with the chance of developing into an NFL Draft pick.”
