The Man Who Would Be King

On paper it should have been better but, still worth watching at least once. Michael Caine especially shines in this one.

A 70s adventure film set in 1900s India. Filmed in Morocco Based on a story by Rudyard Kipling. Directed by John Huston

Saw it years ago and my favorite Connery and Caine movie since then.

When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,

And the women come out to carve up your remains,

Just role to your rifle and blow out your brains,

And go to your Gawd like a soldier.

-Kipling

Great film.

Caine and Connery is one of the greatest on screen pairing ever. That alone makes this movie a treat.

That partnership is up with, Newman and Redford, Lemmon & Matthau, Hepburn & Tracy, Pryor and Wilder.

They really were a great and very balanced pair. And the set up of them being ex-soldiers turned con men, swindling their way through a foreign land, was perfect for a buddy adventure.

Huh? It was great! It's a good movie. WTF did you want from it?!?!

It is good and I do really like it but, it does drag for a large part in the middle. I believe that there was a way to make it just as well received as Indiana Jones or even Time Bandits. I see posts and comments about those movies quite often. I made this post because I’ve never seen this movie mentioned.

Well, it's not a perfect movie by any means, but I wouldn't agree that it dragged. The plot is moved along pretty well throughout the movie, IMO. Kinda unfair to compare it to Indiana Jones.

It’s a classic desert adventure movie with great acting and cinematography. I don’t think it had far to go from being just as good as Indiana Jones.

Also, I watched this movie on dvd just before I made this post and, for me, the beginning moved at a good pace however, it seemed like the director was trying to cram too many different sections of their journey in the middle. A lot of things happened but, it didn’t flow well and felt choppy. Then it smoothed out for a great ending.

It's crazy how young Caine looks in this and how already old Connery looks
