Jacob's Ladder Reading Comprehension Program: Grades 1-2 2nd Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
The Jacob's Ladder Reading Comprehension Program targets reading comprehension skills in high-ability learners by moving students through an inquiry process from basic understanding to critical analyses of texts, using a field-tested method developed by the Center for Gifted Education at William & Mary. Students in grades 1-2 will learn to comprehend and analyze any reading passage after completing the activities in Jacob's Ladder, Grades 1-2 (2nd ed.).
Geared for students in grades 1-2, this book, a revision of the Primary Level 2 book, includes stories and ladder tasks carefully selected for young children to develop oral communication and listening skills in addition to the other ladder goals. This book provides stories focused on picture analysis, read alouds, classics, and original works.
Optional Student Workbook Packs
In addition to this teacher's guide, companion student workbooks are available for Poetry and Picture Books and Short Stories (Parts 1 and 2). The student workbooks feature ample room for student responses and notes, make reviewing and providing feedback on student work easier than ever, provide students with an easy-to-use reference to use during discussions, and save time, as there is no need to reproduce student handouts.

I use JL in our homeschool with my 3rd and 1st graders. You do not need the "workbooks." We use a Schoolnest composition notebook, and my kids draw a picture to accompany the story, and I write in the questions from the guide.
One thing to note, that one of the previous reviewers apparently didn't realize, is that the "stories" are books that are separate from the Jacob's Ladder text. You have to get the other books to read in order to use the questions. The book provides a quick overview of the book mentioned, not the full text. For example, "Ella Sarah Gets Dressed" is a full color book that is available in our elementary school library and the local library. You need to have both the book AND this guide for it to be effective. I would highly suggest reading the introductory text first before trying to utilize this program. It was helpful to understand how the guide will challenge students and how best to implement it.
We haven't started this yet, but so far it meets the expectations that I have, and from here, it's really up to us to use it.
For eg: on page 32, the question says "why did the boy take a picture of himself and then throw the camera back into the water?". But the passage does not even mention about the boy taking pictures or about throwing the camera. It is very disappointing to see that neither the author not the editor even bothered to check for such glaring errors in the book on each and every passage. We had to return the book for this issue.
We had bought Jacob's Ladder for Grade 4 for our older child and liked that book. Do not buy the Jacob's Ladder k-1 grade reading comprehension program book. Same series books for grade 3 or 4 are good and don't have such errors.

I feel discouraged to do the questions with my second grader.
I do like the text but it is not anything I would give my K-1 students. I would give it to maybe 2-3 who are avid readers. I think it works well for 4 graders and struggling 5th grade readers.
