The Jacob's Ladder Reading Comprehension Program targets reading comprehension skills in high-ability learners by moving students through an inquiry process from basic understanding to critical analyses of texts, using a field-tested method developed by the Center for Gifted Education at William & Mary. Students in grades 1-2 will learn to comprehend and analyze any reading passage after completing the activities in Jacob's Ladder, Grades 1-2 (2nd ed.).

Geared for students in grades 1-2, this book, a revision of the Primary Level 2 book, includes stories and ladder tasks carefully selected for young children to develop oral communication and listening skills in addition to the other ladder goals. This book provides stories focused on picture analysis, read alouds, classics, and original works.

Optional Student Workbook Packs

In addition to this teacher's guide, companion student workbooks are available for Poetry and Picture Books and Short Stories (Parts 1 and 2). The student workbooks feature ample room for student responses and notes, make reviewing and providing feedback on student work easier than ever, provide students with an easy-to-use reference to use during discussions, and save time, as there is no need to reproduce student handouts.

K-1 grade book has questions outside of the content given in the passage.
1 Star
K-1 grade book has questions outside of the content given in the passage.
Almost all of the passage questions in grade k-1 book ask for information that was never mentioned in the passage. This problem is for each and every passage. It seems like someone decided to shorten the passages (possibly to suite for K-1 level) but never bothered to change the questions accordingly. For eg: on page 32, the question says "why did the boy take a picture of himself and then throw the camera back into the water?". But the passage does not even mention about the boy taking pictures or about throwing the camera. It is very disappointing to see that neither the author not the editor even bothered to check for such glaring errors in the book on each and every passage. We had to return the book for this issue. We had bought Jacob's Ladder for Grade 4 for our older child and liked that book. Do not buy the Jacob's Ladder k-1 grade reading comprehension program book. Same series books for grade 3 or 4 are good and don't have such errors.

Ok, I literally choked on my coffee reading through the negative reviews on JL Reading Comp. This is a great literature guide for students with strong critical thinking skills. Most of the lessons correlate with an award-winning picture book. Apparently, most folks reviewing this have not read the introduction or paid attention to the text "Caldecott Medal Winner" written on the summary next to each lesson. You need the actual book from the library to teach the lesson! Perhaps these adults need to use some critical thinking skills of their own. 🤔

I use JL in our homeschool with my 3rd and 1st graders. You do not need the "workbooks." We use a Schoolnest composition notebook, and my kids draw a picture to accompany the story, and I write in the questions from the guide.

This book is a "guide" to helping teach and guide kids through reading comprehension. It was suggested to us by our Kindergartener's teacher in this virtual school year, as he needs more challenge than he can receive virtually. This was a pretty easy guide for us as non-teacher parents to help us keep him learning and growing. it is clearly laid out, has a list of the books you'll need in order to complete the work, and has an extensive "how to" guide in the introductory text, that can be understood by anyone, not just teachers or educators.

One thing to note, that one of the previous reviewers apparently didn't realize, is that the "stories" are books that are separate from the Jacob's Ladder text. You have to get the other books to read in order to use the questions. The book provides a quick overview of the book mentioned, not the full text. For example, "Ella Sarah Gets Dressed" is a full color book that is available in our elementary school library and the local library. You need to have both the book AND this guide for it to be effective. I would highly suggest reading the introductory text first before trying to utilize this program. It was helpful to understand how the guide will challenge students and how best to implement it.

We haven't started this yet, but so far it meets the expectations that I have, and from here, it's really up to us to use it.

I love this program but was so disappointed when it was not the grade level I needed. Everything about it looks to be grades, 1-2 but the content is definitely more advanced, and in the inside of the book, it says grade 5

You will still need to find the books listed in the guide. The guide only has blurbs for the selections. The library should have them all.

Love the program, but really, am I the only one to find it odd that the level of books are rather low for second graders but the level of questions are super challenging, like at least 4-5th grade level?
I feel discouraged to do the questions with my second grader.

Some of the questions cannot be answered with the text provided. For example, in the story Ella Sarah Gets Dressed, one of the questions was about the use of colors by the author. The picture is black and white and there is no mention of any specific colors in the text. There are the words "striking" and "flamboyant", but nothing else. Another question asked about the character's response when she wasn't permitted to wear what she wanted. Her parents never stated she couldn't wear what she wanted. They just advised her to wear something more typical. Finally, this book has no answer key. My guess is that it was not provided since it is supposed to be used with K-1 students. I just wanted to see how they answered their own questions.

I do like the text but it is not anything I would give my K-1 students. I would give it to maybe 2-3 who are avid readers. I think it works well for 4 graders and struggling 5th grade readers.

The ladders cannot be completed based on what the student reads. I have to YouTube a read aloud in order for my students to have the ability to answer the questions. I have all the other books. So far this one is the only one not usable. It should be revised or discontinued.
