Rehoboth Police Chief James Trombetta retired Monday night during a board of selectmen meeting.
Residents, officers and civilians thanked the chief for his dedication.
Trombetta started as an overnight dispatcher in 1984.
He worked his way up through the ranks in a dangerous, tough profession.
Sgt. Louis DiBacco will serve as acting chief until a permanent chief is named.
Trombetta will stay on as director of Law Enforcement Operations.
