Dementia now effects around 55M people around the world.

Max Lugavere’s new documentary Little Empty Boxes explores this topic as the author moves home to New York in order to find his mother, Kathy, the best care for the disease.

Deadline revealed earlier this month that Abramorama had acquired North American rights to the doc, which is Lugavere’s directorial debut, and has now unveiled a trailer.

The trailer, which you can see above, chronicles Kathy’s experience with dementia, including difficulties remembering days and months, and sees Max explore methods outside of prescription medication to slow her illness down.

The film presents Kathy’s journey, the hardships of being a caretaker, and a son willing to do anything to save his mother. It explores how diets and lifestyles might help slow down or prevent certain chronic health conditions including dementia.

Lugavere, who co-directed the film with Chris Newhard, is the author behind books such as Genius Foods. The film is produced by by Jacob Matthew and Cecelia Logue alongside Hilla Medalia and exec produced by Courtney Reum, Sherry Milliken Reum, Rosemary Pritzker, Michele Promaulayko, Kiran Krishnan, Jon Sheinberg, Susan Ursitti-Sheinberg, and Matt Feige.

It will open theatrically in New York on April 19 and in LA on April 26.
