Gene Machine

Post by mbday630 »

I know I played this game on this windows 7 computer - but, I can't remember how I did it. I tried to do a search to see what I posted about this game, but, came up with nothing. I tried it on scumm as that is the thing that I use the most, but, couldn't get it to work. then I tried dosbox but can't remember how to use that. do you know how to get this game running? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've never heard of the game! Let me do some checking around.

So, I found this page about running old games. Scrolling down is a fix for running on newer machines. However, it requires a download and since you've chosen to put your Windows 7 computer at risk by keeping it on-line, I can't guarantee it is a safe download.

I have the disc for the game, I don't need a download. As I said, I played it on this machine before, but, just can't remember how I did it. Oh well, playing hollywood monsters now so I am good for a while. but, if you do figure out anything please let me know.

No, you misunderstood the article. You download something called "easy setup" to get your disk game to run on Windows 7.

Oh, jeez. I didn't follow the link because I just wasn't sure of it. There is some basic DOS information in a pinned post at Gameboomers from Jenny100. Grand Old Glitches I think.

I have been thinking hard and I think on Just Adventure someone had posted another thing to use other than dosbox. but, i can't remember what it was. all i had to do was drag and drop the files onto this "thing" and the game worked - at least from what I remember. Would you happen to know the name of the program that plays old games that it is just drag and drop? dosbox is too hard for me to figure out. i went to gameboomers and looked at inferno's dosbox tips but I got a 404 or something that it is not loading up.

Not sure why you would get a 404 error as I just went there to check and it worked for me. Unless it's blocking Windows 7... I have no idea about a drag and drop program! Maybe go to JA and ask there?

I was sure Gene Machine would be supported by ScummVM (that reminds me - I should check what games I have that might run with ScummVM on my phone!) but it appears not, sorry! There are several partially complete attempts at supporting the engine it used, but the most recent hasn't been updated since 2014 so I'm afraid it doesn' t look hopeful.

thanks - I checked too and tried it on scumm but, alas, no luck. I know that I played the game a few years ago, but, my memory fades me. I just wish I remembered how I played the game! oh well, there are millions of games on my computer to play, so, I will work on those.

I don't recall any PC DOS emulator that is 'drag and drop' but from reading this webpage there is a DOS emulator for Mac computers called Boxer that is drag and drop.

DOSBox is not too bad to use if you download a front end for it like LaunchBox or D-Fend. In fact, reading up on LaunchBox it says it is inspired by Boxer so that may be what you used before sounds like it is a drag and drop front end interface for DOSbox. I recommend downloading them and then going to YouTube to watch some tutorials on using LaunchBox it is not too difficult. Hah I say that even as it's been a while since I have used it so maybe I should shut up now. :-)

Thanks Lakerz. I will check them out. I need something easy - and even though others say that dosbox is easy to use, I get so confused with the first line of it - mount something..... wth?

I just downloaded this game from:

https://mega.nz/folder/R8NhAKaC#4wvX86G8HMtpqG_4DFDC7Q

I choose the 2nd one v2.exe and the game works pretty good on my laptop
Win 10 64 bit machine, the only thing if I am up to it is to find out why the Save and Load functions don't work but I might not bother since I am not interested in replaying this game at the moment, I only did this to help out.
So this download which automatically installs and sets up everything might work better on your Win7 machine. I would not wait too long to try it, I don't know how long they keep these files on their download site.
Good luck.

PS: I forgot to mention when you go to the site I gave you, you click on "Download as Zip" , then wait while the site prepares your file and then an option will pop up asking you to Save the file to a location of your choice.
