Mallacoota or Eden

We are a family of four, 2 adults and 2 children - two girls who will be 15 years old and 12 years old when we travel.

We are spending about 2 weeks away - starting with a week in Lorne, then stopping at Phillip Island for a couple of nights and then we have a spare 4 nights, before we head to Jervis Bay for our last couple of nights, then head back to Sydney.

We were looking for accommodation in Eden for those 4 nights, and I stumbled across a place in Mallacoota that looks really nice and peaceful backing onto a beach.

I wondered if there is much to do around there, places to eat, etc, get coffee, if we are not into fishing, nor particularly into kayaking/boating? Or if it would be better to keep looking and to rather find somewhere in Eden?

If the week in Lorne is for the GOR, I would add a stop at the far end rather than backtrack. Even as an adult I had to rest for a while at Lavers Hill to ease the carsickness and even without that I would have hated it as a teenager. There are parts of the GOR we happily drove more than once as we had the time and enjoyed the different moods in different weather and light, but the winding boring inland part was not one.

I’m a bit confused by your reply. Which part is back-tracking?

Lorne is a nice place but spending a week there is a little unusual. Do you intend to use Lorne as a base to explore the GOR as far west as the Port Campbell National park? If that’s the case that will involve a bit of backtracking.

Also it would help if you can give us some sort of indication when your trip will take place? 🤠

Mallacoota is beautiful, Eden is lovely but the township is awful. I would stay in Mallacoota for 2 nights and Metung for 2 nights prior. Your girls may like Lakes Entrance but Metung is gorgeous.

Nothing wrong with staying in Lorne for a week. We have done that for several times a year for over 30 years. Our daughter has just recently stayed for a week with her new baby and loved every minute.

We are going in January. My husband stayed at the Cumberland river park in Lorne when he was much younger and has been really keen to go back as a family. I just let him go ahead and book. We will probably explore parts of the GOR while we are there but are also happy to walk/hike, swim, explore and relax.

Thanks for your reply! And for answering the actual question🤭🙃! (And for the reassurance on Lorne!) We are going in January and many of the places have a 3 night minimum and/or limited availability on certain days which has messed up our itinerary a little, but I will have a look and see whether I can find any for 2 nights in Metung and 2 in Mallacoota, as you’ve suggested.

#3 "Do you intend to use Lorne as a base to explore the GOR as far west as the Port Campbell National park?"

If your answer is no, happy to reassure that Lorne is lovely.

If your answer is yes, my concerns stand, surely better to consider before than to wish you'd been told after.

"Lorne is a nice place but spending a week there is a little unusual"

I beg to differ. Sure, tourists who want to "tick all the boxes" on the GOR usually don't pause for too long at Lorne, but not everyone is in box-ticking mode. Many locals (some even from interstate) regularly spend a week (and even more) at Lorne, especially in summer.

Thanks all for feedback on Lorne. We are happy planning to "do the GOR" on this visit.

As a suggestion if you are using an AWD or 4WD vehicle the Erskine falls road intersects with the MT Sabine Benwerrin road of you head west on that road it intersects with Sunnyside road as a T intersection not far from Skenes creek the road can be done with a 2WD with care but an AWD would be better.

It’s an interesting drive off the usual tourist beaten track that takes you through the Otway’s that was once farm land. Just be careful as when I did that trip I saw a fair bit of wildlife on that road.

If you have a look at google maps you will see the route alternatively the visitors centre at Lorne might have a paper map showing the road that they can give you. 🤠
