Mahito Yokota (born April 13, 1974) is a game composer and sound crew member at Nintendo, best known for specializing in orchestra scores for the 3D Super Mario series.

History[]

Before working with Nintendo EAD Tokyo, Yokota worked at Koei on a variety of their projects. His first title with Nintendo was Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat for the GameCube system. He later worked on the music for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess's E3 2005 trailer, which utilized an orchestrated soundtrack (which can be viewed here).

Upon release, Yokota was hired to compose music with Koji Kondo for Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii, in which his orchestrated music pieces were well received. It was also the first time that a Mario game used any orchestrated music. After Wii Music, Yokota returned to compose music for the sequel Super Mario Galaxy 2, featuring more orchestrated pieces than the original. He later worked on two more entries to the Mario series, including Super Mario 3D Land for the 3DS and New Super Mario Bros. U for the Wii U.

Yokota also worked as the lead composer for Super Mario 3D World, the sequel to 3D Land for the Wii U. Similar to the Galaxy games, he returned to live-performed and orchestrated music tracks in the Mario series, alongside other composers. He was also the game's sound director, which was his first time working in a position outside of music. Yokota later worked on its spin-off, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker alongside with then-new composer Naoto Kubo.

His only work outside a video game are the Pikmin Short Movies animated shorts, all released in 2014.

Outside of the Mario series, Yokota also contributed to the music for the The Legend of Zelda series, providing music for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for the Wii, which also implemented orchestrated music. Additionally, he arranged the soundtracks for the 3DS remakes of the Nintendo 64 titles: Ocarina of Time (2011), which had an orchestrated credits piece, and Majora's Mask (2015), which was his final game as a composer.

Since 2014, Yokota has worked for sound for many games, as well as music supervision and recording management.

In addition to audio work, Yokota has also provided the voice of Cap'n Cuttlefish in the Splatoon games.[1]

For software, Yokota mostly used Roland's Fantom X8 piano and sounds from Loopmasters.[2]
