We've driven by State Fare a number of times and finally decided to stop in one night. We loved the fresh, modern decor and the cozy booth where we were seated. They were playing a lot of 80s music which gave the place a fun...vibe. Our server was warm and friendly and helped us by making menu recommendations. Since it was a cold, blustery day, we opted to order the Sabine Pass Gumbo and the Oaxacan Tortilla Soup. Both were very tasty, and the portions were extremely generous. The gumbo had large shrimp, andouille sausage, chicken, rice, and an entire crab on top. The broth was rich and dark. I thought it was quite good; the whole crab was a bit of a challenge; it made a beautiful presentation, but fishing around in the dark broth and attempting to crack it myself was messy. The tortilla soup was really delicious and flavorful - made with smoky chicken, guajillo chiles, avocado, and long crispy tortilla strips. The bowl came to our table with all the ingredients inside, and our waiter poured a smoking hot broth over the top of them. Delicious. We also ordered a salad to share - the Sweet Greens Salad that was topped with avocado, green goddess dressing, feta, and toasted almonds. It was fantastic and served as a nice counterpoint to the rich gumbo. The serving size was enormous and more than enough for two people to share. Really the perfect combination of flavors; we would definitely get that again. I'd like to see a few less complicated drinks on the menu - regular margaritas rather than spicy ones. Most of the cocktail options were infused with things like habanero, Thai chiles, and spicy gin. Creative but a little overly complicated for us. Overall we really enjoyed dining here and would love to make a return trip. If you're looking for a fun, contemporary bistro with a Southern slant, definitely give this spot a try.More
