We've driven by State Fare a number of times and finally decided to stop in one night. We loved the fresh, modern decor and the cozy booth where we were seated. They were playing a lot of 80s music which gave the place a fun...vibe. Our server was warm and friendly and helped us by making menu recommendations. Since it was a cold, blustery day, we opted to order the Sabine Pass Gumbo and the Oaxacan Tortilla Soup. Both were very tasty, and the portions were extremely generous. The gumbo had large shrimp, andouille sausage, chicken, rice, and an entire crab on top. The broth was rich and dark. I thought it was quite good; the whole crab was a bit of a challenge; it made a beautiful presentation, but fishing around in the dark broth and attempting to crack it myself was messy. The tortilla soup was really delicious and flavorful - made with smoky chicken, guajillo chiles, avocado, and long crispy tortilla strips. The bowl came to our table with all the ingredients inside, and our waiter poured a smoking hot broth over the top of them. Delicious. We also ordered a salad to share - the Sweet Greens Salad that was topped with avocado, green goddess dressing, feta, and toasted almonds. It was fantastic and served as a nice counterpoint to the rich gumbo. The serving size was enormous and more than enough for two people to share. Really the perfect combination of flavors; we would definitely get that again. I'd like to see a few less complicated drinks on the menu - regular margaritas rather than spicy ones. Most of the cocktail options were infused with things like habanero, Thai chiles, and spicy gin. Creative but a little overly complicated for us. Overall we really enjoyed dining here and would love to make a return trip. If you're looking for a fun, contemporary bistro with a Southern slant, definitely give this spot a try.More

The food was excellent and our server was very friendly. My family member got the braised short rib, very tender and so yummy. I got the fried chicken sandwich and it was really great and comes ona yummy bun and their version of a Big...Mac "secret sauce" that tastes really great. For dessert we were given fried Oreos and they were the BEST part of the meal (we love Oreos!) One of the managers, Ady, was very personable and came by our table frequently to make sure all was well. He also personally brought me my beverage and a re-make when it didn't taste as I'd expected it to. Great food, service, and ambiance.More

Visited State Fare Kitchen & Bar last Saturday night and was impressed. Service was excellent and food was delicious. Offers a nice selection of burgers, salads, seafood and appetizers. Plus, the kids meals are great, served on a "cafeteria-like" tray, separating the entre, side, fruit,...cookie, etc. (Much like a Japanese bento box). A big hit for the little ones! Definitely recommend starting (and sharing) the queso blanco with green chiles and brisket. It's fresh and delicious, served with warm tortilla strips. Also, the frozen drink flight is a great accompaniment to this appetizer.More

We were a party of 9 celebrating a birthday. It was was the first time for some of us here including me. We told our server that we had show tickets at 730p and some of us had to be out of there by 645p....We were sat right before 5p. Two stars because the appetizers we had were pretty good, the crab cakes I had were OK. One star for service. The rice that came with the crab cakes were sent back because it tasted pretty "strong"with the spices they used. Where the evening went wrong was towards the end. Our server (let's call him "D") dropped the ball several times which got me very frustrated as well as the birthday girl. We couldn't find him for stretches of time and had to ask for other servers to call him over. We had to ask for certain things several times because he kept forgetting. Around 620p we ask for our check because we had to go in order to make our show. I asked "D" earlier in the evening if they did anything special for birthdays and he said they would bring a dessert out for the bday girl. At this point they still have not brought out the dessert so we can sing happy birthday. After about 15 mintues the birthday girl and my husband start looking at their watches saying we had to leave to make our show. We are looking around for "D" with no luck. When he FINALLY brought the bills for our entire table around 650p my bill was totally wrong. He added several items that weren't mine on my bill. Knowing we were in an extreme time crunch, most servers in better dining establishments would wait for payment and process it right away so we could be on our way. I tried to turn around to let him know my bill was wrong but he had already gone to the table next to us. Not knowing this I turned around to try to catch him before he left so I yell out his name "D" and with the utmost attitude he turned around and said "Excuse me!?" like we were inconveniencing him. So unprofessional! He couldn't have cared less about our situation even though we kept on reminding him throughout the evening. He could've asked another server or manager to help out if he was busy but instead he made us wait another 10-15 minutes so he could fix our bill. At this point we still had not sung to the birthday girl because no dessert. FINALLY around 7pm, someone brings out her dessert and we sing to the birthday girl. We were so flustered at this point thinking we would miss our show that the bday girl couldn't enjoy the moment. It was a S*** show at the end of the evening and our server didn't have a sense of urgency to help us out. It really made our first experience at this restaurant sour. We finally left the restaurant around 710p and drove erratically to barely make the show. We will never be back here with all the OTHER amazing restaurants in Houston with excellent attentive service. This was not one of these places from what we experienced.More

Extremely slow service and horrible food. We ordered our drinks quite a while before appetizers and our appetizer came first. Drinks came after our actual meal. The wrong drink order came out. When our correct order came out, the beer flight and wine was awful,...we couldn’t finish them. As for the food. My husband ordered a bbq chicken salad. The salad came out with mushy, cold, pink chicken that we couldn’t even tell was chicken. We took 2 bites and could t finish it. I ordered Gumbo and it was super salty and smokey. Between the slow service, wrong drink orders, and disgusting food and drinks, we won’t be going back.More

The food is above average especially the hot fried chicken. Interesting menu very appetizing. The day we went the service was slow. Like an hour wait for the food to come out slow. The server was friendly enough but the kitchen was way behind and...it wasn’t that busy. We actually got our food before the 6 top next to us who were storing around waiting when we were seated. The manager did apologize and checked on us after the food showed up. Could be just an off day. Obviously a salad shouldn’t take that long.More

We had a reunion of old friends at State Fare on a Saturday over the holidays. Love the contemporary, modern bistro vibes of this spot. I was surprised that they only had a brunch menu available since it was after 2:00 in the afternoon; menu...choices were a little limited. The food was good, not great. I had a salad topped with shrimp, and it came in a heavy mayo-based dressing that weighed everything down. I probably would have ordered something else if there were a better description on the menu. My husband had the Southwest Baja Bowl, and that was really good, but pricey at nearly eighteen dollars before he added chicken to it. The drinks were excellent. My margarita was delicious, and friends shared a flight of Bellinis that they enjoyed. Our server was really personable, but the service was slow, taking a long time to even get glasses of water and menus. To be fair they were busy since it was a holiday weekend. He offered to do separate checks for all the couples, and we really appreciated that. Overall we had a good time, and they had a nice kids' menu for friends that brought their children. I liked the atmosphere a lot, but prices are a little too high to make this a part of our regular rotation.More

What a wonderful meal and atmosphere. First time going and will definitely be back. Had the pork chops and the jalapeño hush puppies—it was all very delicious and the food spoke for itself. No heavy sauces or creams to smother the dood, the natural flavors...complimented with the right seasoning. Very healthy portions and a great price point.More

4 of us went for the first time yesterday. 3 had the breakfast platter. Cat head biscuit was huge, 2 maple bacon and 2 sausage patty topped off with the best hash browns. The meal is big enough to split, we had lots of leftovers....1 had the eggs Benedict over crab cakes, while this is not to my taste I did sample and the crab cake was amazing. Will be back- can't wait for the Sugar Land location to open up!More

We loved this place!!! They have outdoor seating and great service, but the food was the star! We had the Purist Mac ‘n Cheese with Gulf Trash, which was creamy and so good, and Pesto Grilled Cheese. For the latter, we asked the waiter what...was the best side they had. He said the Whiskey Glazed Brussels. We immediately laughed out loud, because we both DESPISE brussles sprouts. Cannot even put into words how much we hate the vile bitter little bulbs. He went to great lengths to coax us into getting them, so we relented. He promised he would exchange them for a different side if we did not like them. It was not necessary. They were AMAZING! Sweet and savory at the same time and drenched in a delectable sauce that nearly completely masked the bitter taste of the actual sprouts. We were gobsmacked. The food was all so good that we discussed coming back before the end of our trip (that is something we NEVER do. We plan the whole trip around the meals and attempt to try as many different restaurants as we can in each city). We also tried two of their non-alcoholic drinks, of which they had a wide variety. I don't remember the names, but they were very unique as well.More

This restaurant looks good. It is a chic, trendy bistro that promises to be a great place to eat. I made a reservation to meet a childhood friend while I was in the Houston/Sugarland area. When I arrived, I was greeted warmly by the hostess...and seated immediately. However, the hostess must not have told the server we were there because it took so long that we had to ask another server to find someone to take our order. My biggest criticism of this restaurant is the menu is too eclectic. This is a restaurant that hasn't figured out its niche. I am an adventuresome eater but I like menus that define the restaurant. Poached eggs on Crab Cakes and Crawfish Creole Benefit, both breakfast options, sound yummy but if you have a shell fish allergy, there is no Eggs Benedict option. This isn't a seafood restaurant so why not have one non shellfish option? I asked for poached eggs on toast which is from the, "eggs any style," option. I got two over-poached eggs in a bowl with toast on the side. Since I added two sausage, my breakfast was an a al carte order. You are paying for an awesome location, great ambiance and okay food that is way overpriced. It served my purpose of meeting an old friend and catching up but I'm not sure I would go back.More

Food served ice cold. Very crowded and very loud. Food served almost immediately after it was ordered. We commented on that. It could not have been prepared after we ordered it . Even had it been warm I am not sure it would have been...good. Chicken fried steak was awful. I will never return. I wrote similar review yesterday but it was not published on trip advisor. I do not know why. If it was published then delete this. Our server was attentive. He did not deliver the food. It is clearly a chain restaurant.More
