When gigantic robots attack New York City, "Sky Captain" uses his private air force to fight them off. His ex-girlfriend, reporter Polly Perkins, has been investigating the recent disappearance of prominent scientists. Suspecting a link between the global robot attacks and missing men, Sky Captain and Polly decide to work together. They fly to the Himalayas in pursuit of the mysterious Dr. Totenkopf, the mastermind behind the robots.

A dorky, pulpy mix of heightened adventure tropes and technical wizardry. Weird movie. It's aging like milk, but that's a key reason why I still love it. But it felt like a great film to debut with a new podcast. Kerry Conran's "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" is a clear case of computer generated style over narrative substance. That style may be gorgeous and groundbreaking at times, but it can not pacify those in need of an involving and engaging story. Still, its look and eventually interesting plot beats are enough to make the film an above average experience.

Someone said that this movie would be the future of movie-making. A movie filmed entirely on "green screen" was revolutionary and although it was certainly a eyeopener, it wasn't for everyone.
Roger Ebert loved this. I'm not convinced it merited the 4 stars he gave it, but there is enough here to sustain the interest along with a look all of its own. It's hard to explain the aesthetics on display here, it's all a little odd looking. Having actors blending in with computer-generated surroundings was a brave move and the film is surprisingly futuristic looking and the visual concept is intriguing in a geeky sort of way. It may not have set the box office alight or been cheap…
I think it says a lot about this film that it hasn't become some huge cult thing with a passionate following that insists it's one of the greatest things ever made in the last 16 years.
Because beyond the still amazing aesthetics, there's almost nothing here. The plot and ideas behind it are absolutely wafer thin, with almost none of the characters exciting (or excited) enough to give it an extra layer of *something*.
Those looks are still quite something though. Even after all this time, they are fresh and conceptually wonderful. The idea of marrying a film noir sheen to a 1950s sci-fi idea is extremely adventurous but it looks almost effortless at times, like the two could not…
It is fun, daring, inventive, exciting, and above all adventurous. It feels like a mixture of an adventure film and a German Expressionist film.
If you are a fan of classic films of the 40's it will give you a warm, fuzzy feeling of nostalgia. As an imaginative visual experience, there's nothing like it. I really felt transported to another time, not only through the visuals but the acting style and the pacing. While some of the special effects might feel a bit dated by today, the film itself does not.
It really does have the entertainment value of movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark or the Star Wars movies have.
This made Mutant Chronicles look like Avatar.
I mean, jeez, I don’t know. It’s not that bad. The first half an hour in the city was the hardest stuff to look at, but it got easier on the eyes as it went along. Movies like this weren’t made with being watched on an OLED in mind. Kind of a neat little throwback sci-fi story and I liked Paltrow and Dude Law in it. Angelina Jolie was fun, Giovanni Ribisi was present. Not much else to say.

I get what they're going for. I can appreciate The Plan. It's the execution that's flawed.
It's just too much. The cartoon machines are 0% scary. Angelina Jolie is barely in the film. Huge swaths are unforgivably boring.
If you have "cheesy early 20th century films" as your inspiration... you better keep it rolling. This doesn't.

Yes, it's Sky Captain, strange movie from another planet who came to our cinemas with CGI environments far beyond those of normal films.
So how many films can you think of where the ‘making of documentary’ is actually more interesting than the movie?
Films being shot on a "digital backlots” are completely common place today, but back in 2004 it was a whole new world. You had George Lucas spending millions on developing the concept, and then you had Kerry Conran in his tiny apartment single-handedly squeezing every ounce of rendering power out of his personal macintosh computer.

Obviously pastiche, but it's so damn genuine! So unabashedly dorky! It's a real bummer this doesn't keep the quality of the truly transcendent first 10 or so minutes, even more of a bummer that it's somehow almost 110 minutes long (should be 85 at max), still more creative than most anything I've ever seen (even other digital backlot stuff). Not an unqualified success, but this is the closest thing to a Maddin blockbuster I think I'll ever see, and I hope Conran gets behind the pilot's seat for another solo flight someday.
Sky captain and the world of tomorrow, is a pulp scifi adventure film lifted from the comics, cartoons and radio plays of the 40s and 50s, looks delightful, has a metropolis, noir look to it. Its a bit long and light on plot, but it's energetic, creative, old school adventure storytelling with action, machines and creatures. Filmed entirely in a blue-green, its a shame the director only did this as a feature film, would've loved to see more from him.
