What works against this CD is what works for it: this is very clearly a patched together release of two very different projects that had likely been started andd stopped by Young as he switched gears in mid-stream. "Funny how some things that begin spontaneously, end spontaneously, heh heh" Well this, then, is pure Neil.
Thing of it is, it is just loaded with brilliant work: "Star of Bethlehem" with Emmy Lou Harris is a thing of beauty, not to be repeated until their duet on her version of "Wrecking Ball" 25 years later. Linda Ronstadt and Nicollette Larsen deliver the goods throughout the first side. It is an acoustic wonder, absolutely pristinely recorded, full of nuances and an edge that for all intents and purposes was marking the end of this style of song from Young. These are the final descendants of "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing".
Meanwhile, over on the electric side is "Hurricane," one of the greatest Young songs ever, and the song that somehow resuscitated and redeemed the reputation of Crazy Horse. Lord only knows how they could be so horrible on almost every occasion and then somehow come off with this. If everything else on this CD were just impossible to listen to, "Hurricane" would none the less justify the purchase. The remastering job here is a thing of beauty.
Keeping with the schizoid nature of this CD, the cover "art" is certainly in the worst of all possible tastes, but the music, oh the music, blows you away. "Will to Love" marks the end point of a period for Neil. All the extraordinary and disturbing events of his most horrific personal years had been unable to defeat him. This tune, like McCartney's "She's Leaving Home," hits the heart as few other pieces in the popular cannon ever have.
Absolutely, this is essential listening. The Japanese version of this has had live performances of this and other unreleased material from this period. Pity Young did not extend the schizophrenia just a bit more...

This one contains the original masterpiece "Like A Hurricane". Incredible. The rest has not been historically as well-received but keep an open mind because there are several other lesser-known gems here. Enjoy!

Let me start by saying I am a HUGE Neil Young fan. and I almost gave this 5 stars. The tracks "Hurricane" and "Will To Love" are masterpieces without a doubt. "Hurricane" has a rocking, melancholy, darkness that blows you away. And "Will To Love" is so incredibly mysterious, strange, lonely and beautiful that it brings you to tears. This is some of Neil Young's best work EVER.
But what makes this a 4.5 star in my opinion are some of the other tracks, which are just average country stuff. For comparison sake, the "country" sounding tracks on the Harvest album seemed to be pure MAGIC all the way through. But on Stars N Bars, some of them just don't quite muster up to that high bar. And it's a weird juxtaposition of genres that doesn't quite cut it on this album. Almost, but not to a 5 star level.

I recently upgraded my stereo equipment, so I figured I'd snap up some of Neil's DVD-A's. I received this one along with Hawks & Doves yesterday in the mail. Both were mastered the same way. I have a Toshiba DVD player that can play DVD-Audio, but maxes out at 96kHz (only two choices can be made on the Toshiba's audio setup screen: 48kHz or 96kHz) . I run a digital coax from the DVD player into my new Denon 2809CI receiver and it shows that these discs are being decoded at 88.2kHz on my system... which is half of the possible 176kHz, but double the 44.1kHz of a regular CD. Anyhow, when I compare Stars 'N Bars to Hawks & Doves, it's Hawks & Doves that really shines. Stars 'N Bars wasn't all that impressive sonically. I suppose when I upgrade to a BluRay player, I'll see if the 176kHz makes any difference... but I somehow doubt it on this particular release, as it seems the limitations I'm hearing are in the master tapes, since Hawks & Doves sounds so much better.
Neil's more recent audio DVD releases (apparently not exactly DVD-audio, but DVD video containing the "hi-res" audio), were mastered at 96kHz/24 bit (Prairie Wind, Chrome Dreams II, Massey Hall, Sugar Mountain, and Live at the Fillmore East) . So I can only guess that the 176kHz/24 DVD-Audio is more than is really needed or Neil would keep pumpin' those out.

Mr. Young's American Stars N Bars is long overdue fot a re-release. The album cover art will not benefit by the reduction in size, but that is the only drawback to this reissue.
As I noted in the title, Like a Hurricane appears here first and while Mr. Young has graced us with versions of this song on five of his albms, and most of his concerts...this is the first version released of that haunting song that begins:
Once I thought I saw you
in a crowded hazy bar,
Dancing on the light
from star to star.
Far across the moonbeam
I know that's who you are,
I saw your brown eyes
turning once to fire.
And so on. ASNB has more than a single song - Star of Bethlehem, Saddle up the Palomino, Homegrown, Will to Love and The Old Country Waltz are a few of the other outstanding songs on this album.
This is a fine example of Neil's mid '70's work and it belongs in every NY collection.

One of Young’s better records, including several songs from his failed to complete LPs Chrome Dreams & Homegrown: Like A Hurricane, Hold Back The Tears, Will To Love, Star Of Bethlehem & Homegrown.
Backed by Crazy Horse, Young plays guitar with a controlled reckless abandon! Listen to the title track and your ears will begin to smoke! Seriously, Young gives us a glimpse of what’s to come with future records Rust Never Sleeps & Live Rust.
A must have for Neil Young fans!

Neil's Beste

Half A Masterpiece

Quasi ingombrante "Saddle Up The Palomino", aggressiva al limite della volgarità più irridente "Bite The Bullet" e poco 'istituzionale' l'ingenuo valzerone di "The Old Country Waltz".
A Rollercoaster Album!

Like a hurricane - einer seiner allergrössten Rocksongs!
The sacred and the profane. Like a hurricane live gespielt hatte.
Anspieltipps: Will to love, Like a hurricane, Homegrown

El tema estrella es, sin duda, "Like A Hurricane" aunque hay que escuchar los soberbios "The Old Country Waltz", "Saddle Up the Palomino", "Bite the Bullet" y "Hey Babe".
Totalmente recomendable
