- Edited one year agoThis sounds pretty good. My pressing is cloudy looking and there are light scrapes, they don't seem to have any sonic effect. There is not much surface noise at all, even during the quiet parts. The sound is just slightly veiled, as if it's missing the last little bit of sparkle - I used my treble control to fix that. The veiled sound makes sense since this cost me only $18, which is well under what we expect to pay for an audiophile record these days. If I were to give this a comparison, the 75th year Blue Note series is kind of like this. Many of those have cloudy vinyl as well, and they, too, and not the last word in audiophilia (sometimes they, too, would play with almost no surface noise, when you got lucky).
With all that said, this album sounds really good. It's easy to point out the instruments. The sax comes out of the left channel and has a very warm, burnished tone to it - very pleasant and not piercing or any other such obnoxious thing. The drums come out of the right and are well-represented, as you can hear every thwack, and the cymbals have fairly good decay. The piano is soft, but then so are all Van Gelder pianos. However, that doesn't mean the piano is unpleasant, it's perfectly listenable. The bass is easy to follow and count plucks.
Overall, I am satisfied with this record.

I am looking for someone who owns this record but is missing the jacket because I have the jacket. Either sell me your record or buy my jacket please. Message me!- Took a punt on this pressing after enjoying a youtube sample. After the initial horror of Rainbo/URP liner style the LP is flat enough and non fill free so major relief. Sounds pretty good if not AAA

Insanely underrated modal session by Bobby Timmons with amazing saxophone playing by Wayne Shorter. I've read reviews calling this soul-jazz and funk, but more than anything else the focus here is a modal jazz. I can't detect any funk anywhere. Just look at the players - not a funk quartet in any way, shape or form. Bobby's piano playing is much more in a spiritual vein, and Wayne Shorter is in great form blowing hard and improvising in space. More than anything this sounds like it could be on Strata-East. While I like Bobby Timmons, I find some of stuff to be a little more lightweight than I typically like, but this one is not that. Deep, spiritual, grooving and beautiful. One of his best LPs to my ears. A great one no doubt.
