      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The Virgin Suicides drifts with a dreamlike melancholy that may strike some audiences as tedious, but Sofia Coppola's feature debut is a mature meditation on disaffected youth.

Sophie Mackintosh New Statesman The film’s visual style is not in thrall to aestheticised despair, but best understood as an appreciation of the Lisbon girls themselves, a celebration of their lives, fairly unremarkable until they are not. Jul 26, 2023 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) And yet a film set in suburban Michigan in 1975, about a quintet of teenage pre-Raphaelite enigmas who take their own lives, somehow remains dreamy and beguiling. Rated: 4/5 Mar 27, 2023 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Crooked Marquee The Virgin Suicides offers a glimpse into the murky unknowability of adolescence, and its legacy is tied to the portraits of femininity with which Sofia Coppola has crafted her filmography. Tom F A strong film, better than Sofia Coppola’s second film, though the latter got more attention. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/17/24 Full Review Nayara G only the girlies will understand this Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/23/24 Full Review Ana isabela Felipe de assis A Eu sou literalmente a Cecília Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/04/24 Full Review Kevin P An intriguing title is the only good thing about this film. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/31/24 Full Review Liliana H The film I am rereviewing is The Virgin Suidice film by Sofia Coppola in 1999. The main stars in the film are the Lisbon sisters who are Cecilia who is the youngest, Lux who is 14, Bonnie who is 15, Mary who is 16 and Therese who is 17 years old. The story is set in Michigan during the 1974s. The two major genres I see in this film are horror and romance. The plot premise of this film revolves around the lives of the Lisbon girls and the teenage boys whose lives were affected by the girl's death. A single aspect that stood out to me was the lighting effects. In this film they used very dull colors which went with the theme of the story. The colors they used in the film made the story appear more gloomy and sad. Another aspect that stood out to me was the acting. I think they were on point with their acting, and with their facial expression. It's like you could feel what each character went through in the film. Last but not least the musical soundtrack, it was mixed with different hits from the period that I enjoyed. My overall reaction to the film was filled with different emotions. The two major emotions I had while watching this film were happiness and sadness. The Virgin Sudide was a beautiful piece that had many qualities to it. There were parts in the film that I related to the girls, especially Lux, which I felt more connected to. I do recommend this film to young views like me because this film gives you something to consider in life. This may be an issue people face in the world and some may relate to this film. Also if you are into thriller and drama type movies, this is the one for you:) I would give this movie a 9/10 because I enjoyed watching this movie because it was an amazing film and I would most definitely watch it over again.
