Maroon Softball sweeps William Peace

The Doubleheader Facts:
Scores: Roanoke 3, William Peace 1; Roanoke 7, William Peace 4
Location: Troutville, Va. (Botetourt Sports Complex)

The Short story: The Roanoke College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader Sunday against visiting William Peace University, 3-1 and 7-4.

How it happened (Game 1):
*William Peace scored one run in the third to take an early lead.
*Roanoke took advantage of a Pacer error in the fourth to plate two runs, the second scoring on an Ally Brown single.
*Molly Epperson singled in the fifth to bring in Lilly Burns.
*Maggie McCray entered the game with one on and no outs in the seventh and recorded three-straight outs to end the game and earn the save.

Inside the numbers (Game 1):
*Lindsay Gedro earned the win in the circle, working six innings while allowing five hits, two walks with four strikeouts.
*Epperson finished 2-3.
*Cierra Lear had two hits for WPU.

How it happened (Game 2):
*Logan Ayers hit a solo home run in the first inning to put William Peace up 1-0. Shaniya Lewis hit a triple as part of a two-run Maroon first frame to take the lead.
*Lauren Hoffman hit a two-run single in the third to give RC a 4-1 edge.
*The Pacers' Taryn Shelton hit a two-run homer in the fourth to cut the edge to 4-3 but Roanoke scored two more in the bottom of the frame. The Maroons added an insurance run in the sixth and McCray again notched the save, her third on the season.

Inside the numbers (Game 2):
*Adriana Rivera went 3-3 with three runs scored and two stolen bases.
*Lewis finished 2-2 and Hoffman was 2-4 with three RBI.
*Katelyn Craghead was 2-3 and Madison Courts had two RBI.

Up Next:
*Roanoke (7-5) opens Old Dominion Athletic Conference play next weekend. The Maroons host two nationally ranked programs, Randolph-Macon College and Virginia Wesleyan University, Saturday and Sunday with doubleheaders slated to start at 1 p.m. each day.
