'Serenity' is Free on Youtube.. Just Watched it for the First Time

Serenity

Not a huge sci fi guy, never seen FireFly, but I did love Buffy and I liked Angel back in the day.

I think this movie is stellar, I was low key sad as f*ck for characters I didn't even know. Jayne is an awesome side character, and damn Fillion is just fun to watch. The Operative was such a good villain, played by such a good actor [Chiwetel Ejiofor]. I can't believe how much I liked this movie. Yes there are some tropes and the end has some cheesy points, but it's extremely sentimental and it makes sense. The CG and overall effects were done so stylistically that is still holds up pretty damn well. This is a good film.

Well this is some BULLSHIT

Worst tv/movie death ever

He said he had to kill a main cast member (OG ship crew) before the climax to make the audience think “this might be it” and it gave Zoe her motivation/anger, and gave the rest that “oh shit, this might actually be it, our best friend just died” vibes and made us wonder if any of the crew will live, that is ofc before river goes all super soldier ballerina on the reavers

I mean...I get it. But they still did my boy so dirty lol

Such a great performance. My Tudyk love affair has been continuing lately with Resident Alien.

I just turned a friend onto that and he has bern having a blast.

I just learned that was him so after I’m done watching Andromeda for the first time, I’m heading over.

As for my favorite leaf on the wind, I’ll be on my own death bed and it will be too soon.

Make sure you watch it again AFTER you finish the series. If you think it's good now, wait until you have more context. It will blow your mind

Yep I second this, watch the show them go back to the movie again

I, likewise, hadn't seen Firefly before seeing Serenity. Despite being a Buffy fan, somehow the series just escaped my attention (I was traveling a lot when it was first broadcast).

Having enjoyed the movie, I do recommend you step back in time even further and watch the whole series, which is at least as good.

It’s because Fox tanked it, aired it out of order, switched its time slot like 6-7 different times and kept giving it terrible lead ins, Fox is notorious for killing off sci-fi shows in their first season simply due to production costs

I remember seeing an advertisement saying coming soon. Then it took me like 2 months after it's release to catch my first episode on live TV. They just made it so hard to find, I think I only caught 3 episodes before it was canceled. I ended up buying the DVD set, but it was canceled right after.

If this show released today with modern streaming and search, it would be one of the most popular new sci-fi shows along with mandalorian and fallout.

It was 2002, not exactly a great time for any shows with high budgets, Fox also made a ton of money in reality tv shows with very little budget, I feel they gave Whedon a little latitude with his Buffy/Angel success, giving him firefly and later ,dollhouse

That’s OK, the series escaped most people’s attention…

I have to admit, Serenity was my gateway to the 'verse.

Take My Love, Take My Land Take Me Where I Cannot Stand I Don't Care, I'm Still Free You Can't Take The Sky From Me Take Me Out To The Black Tell Them I Ain't Comin' Back Burn The Land And Boil The Sea You Can't Take The Sky From Me There's No Place I Can Be Since I Found Serenity But You Can't Take The Sky From Me...

So basically serenity was supposed to be season two without any fluff or filler episodes, just main plot, season 3 had it ever been shot/written was going to be a new civil war, but this time alliance vs alliance

You should definitely watch Firefly. It's so good!

Second, Third, Fourth, etc watching the TV show. Just please watch in DVD order. Not in aired order. Cancellation aside, Fox really messed with the show making them air in a super-non-sensical order.

u/rans0m avatar

If you had seen firefly before this, the tears would have flowed much more. Also, firefly is more of a western in my opinion. Serenity seemed much more scifi.

Now, go back, watch it again, and realize that opening scene within the ship is one long take.

u/ottershavepockets avatar

The show and film are so great and if you watch Nathan Fillion’s other shows.. There are Easter Eggs pointing back to Firefly. He has said it is one of if not his favorite work of all time.

Especially Castle.

"Didn't you wear that, like, five years ago?"

u/ottershavepockets avatar

Loved that bit “Space Cowboy” 🤣

As good as you think that movie is it's nothing without watching the show first.

u/WontTellYouHisName avatar

In Orson Scott Card's review of the movie, he wrote "I'm not going to say it's the best science fiction movie, ever. Oh, wait. Yes I am."

u/Tricky-Improvement76 avatar

I'm insanely jealous of you OP. Enjoy Firefly.

Definitely go watch Firefly, everything you love about the movie you're gonna love about Firefly. ^^

I saw this when renting videos was still a thing. Hadn't seen any previews, but I like sci-fi and picked it up on a whim. Felt like I was missing something and found out it was basically an end cap for a show that was canceled after one season. Within five minutes of starting Firefly I'd learned that Alan Tudyk existed and was fucking awesome. I also discovered that I had a favorite TV actor in the form of Nathan Fillion. To me, that series us like the funnier, live-action younger sibling of Cowboy Bebop.

u/Mwahaha_790 avatar

Please stop what you're doing RIGHT NOW and watch Firefly. Then come back here with your mind blown and your heart in pieces. We're here to support you. Brown coats forever!

Anyone wanting to scratch that Firefly itch should play Outer Worlds. It's not 1:1 by any means, but enough references that make you smile.

I was so happy when it was the free game of the week on Epic Game Store a few weeks ago. But it has conflicts with my video card, so I still haven't played. :(

My brother got it for me as a gift when it came out. My PC is not great, and it barely ran. Had to turn framerate down and whatnot. Still was a slog. On my ps5 now its great. Minimal problems.

I thought my dad would be the last idiot to watch Serenity having not seen Firefly, yet here you are boasting about it

As many other have said - go watch the series. You will gain a whole new understanding of the characters in the movie, and just as importantly, the characters that were not in the movie.

The series strikes me as more of a western set in space. Sort of. Well worth watching, and watching again, and watching again, and....

Saw it in the theater back in the day, totally a random matinee movie. I loved it, best sci-fi I'd seen in years.

Still incredulous that they canceled Firefly after one 13-episode season. Stupid.

u/More_Cry5242 avatar

The movie was my first exposure. I immediately sought out the series. Fox F’d up.

haha, just found that too. watching it now!

In case you guys didn’t know, hit up the audible book series with Josh Weldon being a big part of it. Picks up where Season 1 left and includes a few fillers. Makes me yearn for it to return.

I also watched the movie before watching the TV show.

u/rejectallgoats avatar

I always felt this movie was made because they got tired of hearing “season two when?!” So they made the movie to make it impossible. I dunno. I just felt the movie had an essence of spite for the audience in it.

Unfortunately the show was dead long before the movie was shot. Everyone knew that there was never going to be a 2nd season. The movie was for the fans.

We just had a Firefly marathon including Serenity. When asked why replied, why not.

Good answer

u/Successful-Comb-7426 avatar

One of my favorite movies. I literally just got done watching it about 10 minutes ago on YouTube and was happy they had it!

I agree with everyone else about watching Firefly, but be prepared for the agony.

I accidentally watched serenity, then talked to my nerd friends about it who told me to watch Firefly. I binge watched it and then became enraged for 6 months afterwards because it was cancelled too soon. How I met your mother gets 49 seasons, but they aborted Firefly in it's infancy... Kewl, kewl, kewl, kewl.

Now I write firefly fan fiction and distribute it at comic-cons to unsuspecting patrons. I mean, I kinda do that... Actually, I just scream it out in the shower while wearing Jane's knit cap every so often when I think of it. It's basically the same thing I think.

I aim to misbehave.

Huge Firefly fan here ... Given the circumstances (the cancellation of the series and the fact we had to wait so long for the conclusion, cause of said cancellation) it holds IP extraordinarily well, so a 8/10 for me. My reasoning for this instead of a perfect score, despite the fact that I'm a Browncoat!

  1. As a casual viewer, after watching the series and finding up by watching the movie, in a package it's a good and tight experience, although not as quite satisfying as I would have liked it too be (if you're not a casual viewer, you can get all that extra satisfaction by indulging in the spin-offs like the comics.

  2. This one is gonna sound nit-picky, but I hate the fact that Serenity can be heard in space when she flies by the camera! Yes, I'm a nerd, hi! Usually I don't give a damn 'bout such things or scientific accuracy....this is fiction is after all, and sci-fi to boot, but, throughout the bloody series, when these various situations came up, silence every time; in the movie, total opposite.

But yeah, still loved it.

Can I get the link to it on YouTube?

The cheesiness of the ending is actually part of Mal’s arc from the show. He’s a total cynic who’s abandoned hope in the beginning of the series. The fact he’s back to pontificating about flying with love instead of just math at the end of the movie holds much more weight when you know what he’s been through.

There’s a Firefly boardgame which is pretty popular with lots of expansions for fans…

“In Firefly: The Game – based on the popular Firefly television series created by Joss Whedon – players captain their own Firefly-class transport ship, travelling the 'Verse with a handpicked crew of fighters, mechanics, and other passengers. As a captain desperate for work, players are compelled to take on any job — so long as it pays. Double-dealing employers, heavy-handed Alliance patrols, and marauding Reavers are all in a day's work for a ship's captain at the edge of the 'Verse.”

I pity those that watch the movie before the show. They will never truly understand nor experience

Where’s the sauce?
