edit: Inconsistent in a way uTorrent wasn't for me
What are things I can do to make qBitTorrent faster? It's inconsistent in a way that uTorrent was for me. How can I make it faster? What are the optimal settings?
Your post is very vague (what do you even mean by inconsistent??). You should update your post with your expected ISP upload/download bandwidth vs what you claim to be getting in qB. Also remember that most ISPs measure in megabit/second while qB measures in kibibyte/second.
Also, have you already tested with a known good torrent? e.g. Try downloading a [Ubuntu Linux torrent] (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/alternative-downloads) & see what your speeds are.
Some other things to check:
-
Did you limit your upload/download bandwidth in qB? If you limit your upload to something ridiculously low then your download speeds will be affected. Try setting upload/download to something like 75%-90% of your total ISP bandwidth.
-
Make sure you are connectable (port forwarded) like u/PablolyonsD said. Test qB's Listening Port with something like http://www.canyouseeme.org/ & make sure the site can "see" qB. If the test fails then you may want to set up a port forward through your software firewall and/or network router/firewall.
-
Disable uTP Protocol if you're having issues with qB slowing down its upload/download bandwidth.
-
To maximize your ability to connect to other peers make sure you have DHT & PeX enabled. Also set Encryption Mode to "Prefer Encryption"
Force start when you right click on a torrent is one option, have you tried opening ports on your router? Maybe uses different ones, also when you click on a torrent, at the bottom appears a list of what's in the torrent, if you right Click you can set the priorities, set to maximum! I think its faster than vuze and uTorrent and way lighter client! Good luck
Lol can you ELI5 what ports are
Well you can simply google: open ports router, followed by qbitorrent ports. Ports are very ELI5 basically doors aplications use to comunicate from The internet to your pc, maybe you can consider them highways as oposed to the road that every1 uses and is busy as fuck! Why would some1 downvote my previous comment Without saying why.... Would be great to know!
TLDR - ports are mailboxes. Port forwarding forwards the mail from mailbox X to mailbox Y. Think of ports as mailboxes. Let's say you wanted to hand deliver a letter to Joe at the Acme Brick company. You would go to the address of the Acme Brick Company. The company employs 5,000 people. So you would see a grid of boxes with people's names on them. You find the one that belongs to Joe and you put the letter in there. This is kind of how computer's talk to each other. The street address is the IP address of the computer (say 192.168.1.1) and the grid of mailboxes is the port. If you want to talk to a computer via http, you would send your information and requests to port 80. If you wanted to talk to them with a different protocol like RDP, you would talk to 3389. If you wanted to talk to the SMTP service on that computer, you'd talk to port 25. You are going to that computer and putting your correspondence in a particular mailbox (port). Now, let's say that Joe is a secret agent who works for the Acme Brick Company. To you, he's known as Joe. To everyone inside the company, he's known as Bob. This identity may be so super-secret that Bob doesn't even know what name you know him by. You just know him as Joe. You want to talk to Joe so you go to the Acme Brick Company, you find their grid of mailboxes and you put your letter in Joe's mailbox. Some poor mail clerk on the other side (your router) know's Joe's secret identity. So he takes the mail from Joe's box and put's it in Bob's mailbox. This way Bob can pick it up. This is port forwarding.
Have you tried seeding your torrents?

As long as there are seeds, default settings max my 100mbit line no problem.
