Howard W. Blake High School & Magnet Program Reviews

Going to this school is very fun! There are some things that pester sometimes, like three flights of stairs (constantly) to get to my classes. The campus however, is pretty small so it’s relatively easy to get around. Every student has the option of choosing starter classes of the magnet programs, which specialize in the Performing Arts, such as Theater, Orchestra, Dance, etc. It’s a place full of connections and opportunity, so I would recommend going to this school overall. The biggest change that needs to happen is the schools communication and how involved some of the administration is. (Some people in administration are pretty involved though, so not entirely.)
There were times when I would attend and administrators and officers would accuse several students of inappropriate things and would do nothing about harassment or bullying reports
My experience at H.W.B has been a rollercoaster of emotions and moments. This is a party school and all about school pride. Education wise this isn’t the place to seek academic growth from. Short staffed, administrative arguments, no list for colleges and help for others. The food is poor and there is alot of violence.
Overall, Blake High School is a great school if you are studying music at the school. I really enjoyed the practice rooms in our music building and all the different music programs. I really enjoyed getting to learn new instruments and better myself. While at school, I learned how to play bass clarinet, flute, piccolo, and piano. However, I did struggle with our administration. I felt as though the administration did not seem to be all on the same page and there was often confusion in the school.
Teacher's have a tendency of not giving many students opportunities. Teacher's choose the same students over and over.
Howard W. Blake school of the arts has extremely strong artistic classes with 14 diffrent majors. Although it is extremely lacking in traditional classes (Math, science, english, ext.) and has become very hard for students to succeed on standardized testing. Along with this the school staff is rude, uncaring, and snappy. On multiple occasions I have sent over 10 emails to office staff about issues to not get a response. Visiting the office during open hours will often get you yelled at, berated, or in trouble. Staff also do not care anout issues such as 504 plans, stolen items (For example laptops), or issues of sexual assault.
As an alum of Howard W. Blake High School, my experience was interesting, to say the least. I was part of the school's magnet program; was a band major, and was part of the school's guitar program. I was always engaged with the performing arts and the school's social life was very comfortable and uplifting. The school made me feel that I could be who I wanted to be.
My experience at Blake was decent. I was a traditional student and I did not get the normal blake experience but it was still a good one.
My experience at Howard W. Blake High School has been a roller coaster. I’ve gone to having no teacher in a spam of 3 days to having so many experiences and opportunities regarding my future. I personally believe that being a dance major will help me in the future. It has opened me to so many opportunities that will look good in my resume, but at the same time has helped me grow as a dancer. Even though the school hasn’t been the best, it hasn’t done me wrong just yet. I’m part of Student Government Association because I want to better my school. You even could say I’m seeing a change in the school pride and how the students perceived the school. Howard W. Blake High School has it’s ups and downs, but you just have to learn how to navigate through the systems.
overall good school, great art magnet program and teachers. very accepting and diverse. education could be improved.
The Howard W. Blake magnet program is overall very impressive. From the music programs, dance programs, art programs, journalism, creative writing, and theater it all simply is amazing. There are so many talented artists, musicians, designers, performers, and writers. That makes the magnet program a wonderful place to be as a student and a designer.
Blake looks out for the magnet program, but in most situations it does not seem exclusive or any different from any other program. I would like Blake to give more activities and opportunities for the magnet program to be awesome in their major. Give the kids a chance to shine for what they applied for.
Being apart of the magnet program is a unique experience that no other school in our county has. It is a conservatory-like environment that builds teamwork and personal skills. One of my best experiences is performing for a concert called Night of Jazz where I got to sing with a live band filled with people I had worked with the whole school year. Adding to this the chorus program that I am involved in often brings me great experience that make me feel like I have a school family. A downside is that as a Christian, I rarely meet others that have the same faith as me but instead have encounters with those who oppose my faith. Although I have had some trials because of this, I have been presented with many opportunities to share my faith with those that know nothing about it. Overall, something that I would like to see change is the depth of advising as I often feel like some of the counselors and teachers don't really put in the work to see their students succeed.
The best part about the magnet program at Blake is that we have teachers who are best at their subject and involve us in activities that help us improve our skills. We are also around like-minded people in our majors, who want the best for the program. We also do very well in competitions related to our programs, which gives us pride in our school as well. And, in my personal experience, I really haven’t found any issues with my schools or felt any real need for change.
I gave it 5 stars, but only because I adore the art program. The teachers are very attentive and allow you to be as creative as you want to be, and you’re exposed to many different art forms, so what you go in for might not be what you end up with. You experiment with metal crafting, photography, clay and 2d art. I ended up with 2d, but if I had to choose a different major I would have done metal. Everything else is sadly sub par, but if you’re interested in the arts please look into this school, so much passion.
I personally had good experiences at Blake high school. One thing I wish I could change is more school spirit with community and teaching kids how to save and spend and get jobs
My Experience in the Magnet Program (for the most part) was really great. I'm so grateful to have experienced being in it because, I've met so many people from other magnet programs in the school. Because my school is so Diversely Integrated with so many other Races, It's never dull. The Best parts of my experience so far has to be the amount of collaboration that I've been able to do with people that I now can call my friends (which is super cool). The worst part of my experience has to contribute from my Major Teacher. His attitude about things were super passive aggressive sometimes, so his attitude could generally affect yours as well. Although there are things that are annoying that can't be helped around my school, I don't think anything should really change. I think i would be against change more than I would actually be for it.
