This school struggles academically. Grade inflation is rampant, and percentages in certain classes are hidden, masking the need for improvement. Bullying is severe, and disrespect towards teachers is common. Many educators don't take teaching seriously and resort to videos and note-taking instead, and/or are undoubtedly lazy. In some cases, teachers will allow students to have more authority over how things go rather than the other way around. Students receive excessive extra credit to boost their grades. Foods are disgusting and extremely unhealthy, and nothing genuinely hydrating is served. The school receives infrequent principal appearances. Most of my school lockdowns are due to huge fights, with one consisting of 30+ people. Students smoke a lot in bathrooms, drink, and do drugs in and outside of class, but nothing is done about it. On the other hand, this school offers great sports, clubs, programs, and extracurricular activities for students to find friendships and community.
The school has improve a lot with the new buildings. Academically my child has had a lot of substituted teachers this year, who might not have the qualifications to sub. The office staff is always friendly and helpful, the staff the monitors the school outside could use more support. I’ve seen kids jump the fences who completely ignore the staff member . My child’s counselor is quick to respond to my questions, concerns. School environment is okay, there is diversity. I don’t think the school really enforces dress code. I have seen young ladies wear tops that are extremely revealing and few boys that wear baggy pants. Overall the school has pros and cons. Hopefully next year there will be better improvements.
Generally good high school. My experience however may not be indicative of every student's experience, given the huge disparities between the quality of different teachers, counselors, and within different academies. I feel like I had a very positive experience in this school as part of the "School for Advanced Studies" academy, I had mostly competent teachers who worked hard to prepare us for college and wanted to see us succeed. however, I know that this was not the case for all teachers, something which I observed firsthand as a student seeing how the quality of teachers wildly varied. I also wouldn't say that my counselor was particularly helpful throughout my time in high school, I only met with her on a handful of occasions, and she did very little to help me prepare for college or with issues within the school. Despite this, I am aware that other counselors for different academies were even less helpful to my peers. ones experience in this school depends largely on who you get.
