RATTLE OF A SIMPLE MAN (1964) UK, b/w, 92m.
Directed by Muriel Box.
Scripted by Charles Dyer after his own stage play.
Northener Harry C Corbett travels with friends from Manchester to London once a year to watch the cup final at Wembley. Afterwards he meet Diane Cilento in a soho pub and follows her home.
He is shy and unconfident of himself.
She is joyfully teasing him. But has a weak spot inside, in spite of a problematic upbringing.
Instead of a frothing pub spree, we are treated with an endearing and heartwarming chamber play, mostly. On the surface outdated in the mid-sixties, but inside a surprising amount of kitchen sink, both british and italian.
A film to remember.
The R2 PAL (2014) network DVD is crystal clear.
Network has an impressive film collection.
Unfortunately, they are generally cost-cutting on subtitling.
I could have had use for English subtitles here, though.
